What is everyone's take on the Remington 700 Tactical SPS in .308? I am considering this rifle in the not too distant future. This rifle will be a range toy.

What scope would be best (for the money) for this rifle? Maybe like a 4-14x40 or something similar? The range I shoot at is only 100 yards so I am not looking for anything super expensive as far as scopes go....

That's scope would be a bit overkill for 100 yards. Look at the SWFA Super Sniper 10x scope. Great scope for 300 bucks. Also you will want to buy a new stock for that rifle. The Hogue flexes a lot.

Ditto on the Leupold scope. The VX series is reasonable. The MX series better. You want around a 3x10 with a 40mm bell. If the scope does not have a lifetime guarantee, I don't buy. Don't hold a $1000 weapon hostage to a crappy scope or rings...

that Bushnell Elite 3200 is a smoking deal...I have a 3-9x40 Elite 3200 and i love it...they are inline in price with the VX-I, but equal in quality to the Leupold VX-IIs i believe, for less money

Get the Varmint SPS, and buy a H&S precision stock. You will have the exact same rifle as a 700PS for a little cheaper. The longer barrel will give more punch and velocity. Midway has an exclusive made for BSA only 6-24 tactical mill dot scope with target knobs and adj paralax.

My SPS Tactical .308 is easily my most accurate rifle. I run it totally stock with a Nikon Monarch 4-16x40. Lots of people complain about the Hogue stock, but I like the feel and for me it does not seem to be a drag on accuracy.

I have one with a Nitrex TR2 3-15x50 on it and love it. Taken a few hogs, whitetail, and bad guys made of paper with it with no problems.. Ive got 100 rounds or so through it.. Im very happy with my purchase and it looks cool!!

I bought a 700P not long ago and it is just STUPID CRAZY ACCURATE. Like omg accurate. Sounds exaggerated, but its just the truth. Cant go wrong with any of the 700's.

BTW... didn't have any money left after buying the rifle, so I put a "temporary" crappy Barska varmint scope on it. It has actually worked out REALLY well, holds zero, focuses easily, has me shooting dimes all day long. Everyone talks crap about em, but I think this one might just become permanent.

I have an ADL Varmint in 308. I had the barrel cut back to 20" with a recessed crown. The scope I am using is the Meuller APT Tactical and the stock is the factory VTR stock. With my handloads this thing shoots .55moa. Even with the cost of cutting the barrel and recrowning it, it still came out cheaper than the Tactical model.

I'm kind of looking at this scope.

I don't even have that much magnification on my .50 BMG.

Muellers are OK, but for just a touch more, you're into a Leupold VX-1/Rifleman or Nikon Buckmaster with more reasonable magnification.

Running on something that powerful, Parallax and mirage are going to be a constant irritation. With a 3-9x or 3.5-10x, no worries.

I know everyone will disagree with this, but I'd reccomend a Leapers UTG 3-9, or a Centerpoint 3-9x. My extensive expeience with both companies has been very good. I have a Centerpoint on my Ruger 10/22 and after thousands of rounds, has not lost its zero. the Centerpoint on my .308 SPS tactical has only seen about 300 rounds, but has done very well. As for UTG, My friend has an M1A that he has a UTG mounted on, that's seen about 5000 rounds now, and has not lost zero. I'd say that speaks volumes for a $60 scope.

I've been real happy with my Remington for the last year. The only thing I dislike about the action is how hard it is to insert/strip the last round in the mag well (the spring pushes the round really hard against the bolt, making it a bit harder to cycle the first round than it needs to be)

The basic 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff on my .308 700 SPS Tacticool is more than sufficient for my 100yd plinking needs. Shooting my reloads, I can reliably shoot just sub MOA at 100yd with minimal practice. The target is sufficiently clear even at low power, the scope and Leupold rings have stayed zeroed for hundreds of rounds, and I can see where my shots land clearly at full magnification.

I would suggest the OP invest in a new stock for the rifle (unless it comes with a fancy one). Mine was about 1/2 inch short on the length of pull, and the comb drop is about an inch too low for me. It's like they are expecting you to sight down a barrel rib or something. Oh yeah, the plastic stock material feels crummy too (but does serve its purpose). I'm actually carving a replacement from Jatoba/Cocobolo to make mine fit better and give it some much needed heft (good for a bench gun). The factory plastic stock would be great for rough-and-tumble woods carry, though.

BTW, the black matte tactical finish on the gun isn't the most durable in the world. It has held up to gun case abrasions and the like, but areas of bearing (metal on metal) rubbed bare quickly. You will mostly notice it on the bolt (lugs especially, but also were it scrapes as it is removed/installed for cleaning).
