721

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I recently inherited my father's old 721 that he bought in 1956. My dad took care of this when he was young but for some reason stopped when his kids were born (1970s) and I never once saw this gun put meat on the table. I did grow up hunting but hunted with a Savage model 24 (my brother got that one...).
The 721 has a couple of cracks in the stock and hasn't been cleaned since the 80s. I know it's not a super valuable gun but it does have that sentimental value and looks like it would cost less to fix than i would get if i sold it.
So, I have recently become a shotgun guy and am taken with all those fancy H&H guns and such. I'd kind of like to put fresh custom wood on this workingman's rifle but know this is probably a bad idea and a poor investment. What do you think? Clearly I am a total newb but that's the plan right now...

I don't think it's ever a bad investment to get an heirloom rifle in good working shape. I don't know if the wood could be fixed or would have to be replaced, but either one wouldn't even be a dent in an H&H shotgun. Do some searching and see what you come up with. You can always go to McMillan if you don't mind dropping $500 or so. There's also always a possibility you could find one on THR, TFL, etc. for sale.
