I took my new 870 out last weekend and ran a box of shells through it. About every 4th round would get stuck sideways when ejecting (kind of like a horizontal stovepipe). I'm new to shotguns. Is this normal? Am I not racking the slide with enough force? Or do I have a problem, and what can I do about it?

Thanks

I have seen problems like this and have been reading more posts than I care

to mention about the quality gaffs with Remington shotguns of late

manufacture to the extent that I will not reccomend a Remington product to

anyone looking for a decent field grade shotgun. I would send it back and

demand my money back and look for an older Wingmaster or at some of the

more reliable options out there.

I'll say this, I will not buy any new Remington product due to the sorry

service of their products of late.

It's a shame to spend money and realize after the expense that you are no further ahead than before you started.:fire:

I must say I'm a little baffled. I bought am 870 Express synthetic several years ago to have a gun to beat and shoot to death, which I have faithfully attempted to do, and it's never choked once, even when I went through a whole case of S&B birdshot in one day.

If it was me, I wouldn't take it back, but I would call Remington and tell them to fix it. I know that's not a popular option for new guys with their new gun, especially if they don't have another one.

As far as I am aware, the only product in the Remington line that has even occassional QC issues is the Express. Apparently Remington has figured out that a huge percentage of American consumers care more about price than absolutely anything else (at least until after they have made a purchase). They hired a firm called Wal-Mart to run a consumer study, and they proved the concept true beyond any shadow of a doubt, and ran most of the Mom & Pop stores in the world and the concept of service out of town in the process. I would send it to them and have them doctor it. From all accounts, they will.

Before you light your hair on fire and go screaming like a banshee back to the dealer, or Remington, I am thinking you should at least try a few things.

You say you are new to shotguns. OK. Most folks when they first get a new pump treat it like it is Grandpaw's railroad watch. It ain't. If you don't rack the slide with authority, you will get results like you mention. Now, I don't know if that is the case or not, but you can find out by racking the slide like you are trying to break the shotgun. You won't. You can't.

Watch someone shoot an auto loader. Does that bolt gently creep back? No! It slams back like a locomotive. That is the action you need to emulate with the pump.

Next, have you read and followed the owners manual? Did you heed the part where it tells you to thoroughly clean the gun before you shoot it? Remington coats these guns with a rust preventive that is brown, tacky, and generally not conducive to good operation. Clean it thoroughly, and lubricate it well.

Give it another try. The 870 just loves to be shot. The more you shoot it the better it gets. At least that is the experience I have had with all three of mine. I have an older Wingmaster in 20 gage that is just a thing of beauty. I also have 2 Express 12 gages that were purchased within the last 3 years and have yet to give me anything but admirable service.

Wow, I'd not want to have you as a customer...

The Remington 870 does NOT have a spring-loaded ejector. Ejection is 99% a product of the velocity of the slide when it hits the ejector. You should rack the slide with authority. Don't try to break any speed records. For an example of proper pumping velocity, look at this video:

If you weren't doing it like this or stronger, that's likely your problem.
