I recently got this shotgun....

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_SPS_Max_Gobbler.asp

and today I fired its first round and subsequently found the trigger/trigger guard on the gun jammed into the pistol grip portion of the stock. :(

Basically the gun moved about a 1/2" into the stock where it got stuck. I tapped the pistol grip firmly and it popped back out. I fired another round with the same result. I realized at this point that the gun was not functioning correctly and I should stop firing for safety purposes.

The stock has recoil reducing springs and I imagine that there is supposed to be some rearward travel of the gun into the stock, right?

Could it be that its just not "broken in" and needs to be fired more?
Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, how did you resolve it?

I'd prefer to not take the gun back to the dealer or send it to Remington. Any suggestions are welcome.

:banghead:

thanks

This stock is close to my axiom stock I use for may .308 howa and I did not have the problem as you just a question are you using light loads, or if its below freezing and you had your shotgun by the floor vent in you auto/truck could be the problem. Silicone seems to be a non- petro product and may just be the ticket. update us if it improves or not. On my stock the ajustable release if pulled forward allows it to be pulled off incase factory lube has gotten in to the sliding area....

The first round was a Supreme XX turkey 2 3/4 in, 1 5/8, 6

the next round was a Federal 1 7/8 oz 3 in mag.

I wonder if it would even do this with a light load? This gun should be able to handle that ammo as it is a special purpose turkey gun.

The Knoxx stock takes apart at the butt stock while leaving the pistol grip attached. I think the pistol grip portion can also come off as the manual describes using a ball end allen wrench to tighten a pre installed Hex head bolt and washer for assembly. The manual does not describe how to disassemble.

I think I'll try disassembling it and inspecting the tracks along the pistol grip.

edit to add that it was probably mid 30's when shooting, but I don't really know, it could have been colder.

I have put over 500 rounds through a mossy 500 with the same stock. No issues at all. The fact that it was 30 degrees out could have caused the springs to stiffen but I doubt it. It almost sounds like the plastic tubing has expanded and that is what has gotten stuck.....
I'm no expert and that my two cents.

It just needs to "break in"....mine was the same when new and what I did was spray some gun oil into where the plastic slides back.....then I worked the action of the stock by resting the muzzle on a foam pad on the floor as I used my body weight to push down on the stock from the rear....I did about 100 reps and then next time I handled the gun I did another 100 or so and I have never had the problem since!

Thats encouraging news Leadhead, I'll give that try. I probably won't get to shoot it again for a week or so.

Thanks

Well I finally got to shoot it again. I put a bit of oil where the stock slides and the problem has gone away; however, I have a new problem in that the action opens up on its own when shooting heavy loads.

uggh, I'm thinking I got hosed on this POS.

ive had problems with the stock when it popped out of place like you had mentioned. I've also experienced the action opening when shooting 3 inch loads. I can't wait to get a new stock for my gun it definitely won't be the spec ops. I'm thinking a traditional style hogue stock. I checked their website to see about repairs and it said the stock was sold "as is" and there is no warranty past the first 30 days(or some short time frame like that). Oh well, I should've checked the whole warranty deal before wasting my cash on their stock.:banghead:

Griz, glad to hear you got it working!
I wouldn't worry about the action opening up...consider it a version of the winchester speed fire or what ever they called that feature.:D

Thanks Leadhead, your advice was key to getting that stock working. I put probably 50 rounds in it today without a problem.

As I mentioned in my other thread, I'll call Remington about the action opening. I am feeling much better about it.

thanks again.

I have a new problem in that the action opens up on its own when shooting heavy loads.
That's not necessarily problem with the gun, rather, that seems to be how things work with design of that stock.

After you pull the trigger, the bolt is unlocked. The gun rides backwards on the Knoxx stock, and when it his the end of the travel, the receiver stops and then moves forward to the original position. However, the mass of the bolt and fore-end are still moving backwards and, being unlocked, cause the action to open. This motion is exaggerated you are pulling the gun tight to your shoulder with your forward hand, especially as the gun moves forward again.

I have an 870 Express Super Magnum (3.5" chamber), and put a Knoxx stock on it aftermarket. I never had the problem you're describing.

However, I did also put a GG&G sling mount on the end of the receiver, between the receiver and the stock. That puts a small gap between the grip and the triggerguard. It doesn't affect the feel of the shotgun at all.

The action DOES open by itself with heavy loads when using the Knoxx stock, but if you get a good grip on the pumpslide and do a kind of push-pull between your two arms, it'll keep it in place easily. Or you could lighten your grip on the slide and LET it work the action on its own. It won't damage the weapon.

From Remington's website:

It is the design of the Model 870 for the action bar lock to disengage once the shell has been fired. This enables you to load and fire the second shot with more speed.

I have an 870 that has many thousands of rounds through it. If I fire it without touching the forend it will almost eject the round, and this is with light loads.
