I was browsing in the local pawn shop today and found this shotgun there for sale. I don't really know anything about shotguns so I thought I'd ask you guys opinion. I'm looking to do some trap and skeet shooting and just general plinking around. Is this a good gun or no. I did a search here and didn't really come up with anything. I'm still sifting through google, but it isn't giving me any help either. They are asking about $180 for the gun. It is in decent shape. The stock is a little messed up in spots and the finish on the trigger gaurd is a little worn, but other than that I don't see anything wrong with it. Any info or useful web sites would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is one listed on www.gunbroker.com but it comes with three barrels and the starting price is $450.
Obviously a predecessor to the 1100.
Almost looks as though a standard 870 stock (dime-a-dozen) would fit the 878.
I don't have any details about the 878 but I have a book at home that might shed some light on it. I'll look it up and post results later(years of production, etc).

BTW, Welcome! ;)

Thanks, anything you can find would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking online here at work during lunch and all the sites I find on google are blocked. Go figure a military computer that won't let you look up info on a gun.

Hey, ya ain't supposed to be surfin' on Uncle's dime. 8^)

I'd pass on that one, it was a transitional model made only for a handful of years from 1959-62, and only a few tens of thousands were made (less than 70K?). The gas system is iffy depending on how much the gun was shot and more so what with, the 'short magnums' will eat that one alive. Critical parts are hard to find, if you want a shooter find something else. That one has too much chance of becoming a wall hanger/conversation piece.

Stay safe,

lpl
