Remington and 30-06

Just bought a Remington Model 770 in 30-06. I need some help.
1. Who has this gun and what do you think about it?
2. What would be the best ammo for Whitetail deer, hogs, ect.?
3. I got it for $305.00 on Gun Broker.com new in box with a scope (probably change that one to a beter one) did I get a good deal?
4. I have never owned a Remington anything so how is the quality?

Best ammo ? If you don't have much hunting time behind you pick a165 grian or there about that is also a bonded tye bullet. Meaning the core will stick to the brass jacket. This type bullet will do the job and as you learn about different bullet designs you can change to something a bit more specalised as time goes by. Just find what your gun likes best that you can get in most any store. Even the old rem core-lock will kill well. Scope ,try it at daylight and dark,set a target inside a tree line about 100yards away and see when you can know longer tell whats what. You should be able to see clearlt enough to make it to make a shot in legal daylight. I guess you have a good ,150dollar+, 10x 40 or 8 x 32 binos. If the binos out perform the scope set at 4 power before dark then think about a better scope. A 770 is what it is for the price, a good basic hunting rifle and if you do your job it will do its job. For whitetail and hogs just about every .30-06 load will work. Probably a 180grain load would be best. It is a heavy bullet, but will still give fairly flat trajectory. Use either Remington Core Lochts or Winchester Power Points. These rounds are cheaper, are readily available, and will still easily dispatch deer and hogs.

After a bunch of years of being around killing deer with an '06--me and family folks: The old 150-grain bullets do just fine. No need to go heavier; all that gets you is more recoil. I might go heavier if I was after really, really big hogs...

See how that scope works out, first, before worrying about a replacement. Remember that for deer hunting, anything above 4X is a case of, "I want it and I can afford it." It's not a matter of, "It's what's needed." Yeah, I have 3x9s, but they're set on 3X when I'm actually hunting. High magnification is for paper and prairie dogs.

i have one of these guns a i like it alot. it gets the job done for hunting purposes and the scope workss well for hunting. it is definately not a match gun and probably not something to pass down to you grandkids, (plastic parts) but it serves its purpose well. i have shot the WIN super X and REM core-lokt very well. (like 2moa) and im not a very seasoned bench shooter but i can make the kill everytime. overall i think its a decent gun but there is definately better out there

Remington 770

You would have a better gun in the Model 700, but for hunting purposes I'm sure the 770 will do fine. It's definitely not an heirloom but it will work well on hogs and deer. I like the new Federal Fusion in 165 for Whitetails based on price, but the favorites and hard to find are the Sierra GameKing Boat Tail Hollow Points (BTHP) in 150 or 165 grains. Also I hate to disagree with Art, but I've shot a number of deer now where it was required to dial up to 6 or 7 on the scope. When I drive, I use my 12 guage which is only good out to 100 yards or so; driving with a rifle is just too dangerous to the standers.
