Last month I bought a beautiful 1895 Mauser, and I plan on taking it out for whitetail season this fall. Does anyone have any experience shooting both Winchester Super X and Remington Core Lokt, and which would you recommend? I am going to test both to see which is more accurate out of my rifle, but generally speaking is one round superior to the other, or do they both perform about the same? Thanks.

I found my best results, in my Spanish 93, with Prvi Partisan 139gr soft points. $15.99 per 20 at Midwayusa. Really though, you have to try all these light loads to see which one a given rifle likes best. The original load was a 173 gr round nose FMJ so these sporting loads sometimes shoot differently from the military barrels.

I would pick the one which ends up being more accurate in your rifle. These two loads will both kill deer just fine. FWIW, we have killed several deer with the remington managed recoil 140gr in 7mm-08, which is lower velocity than your 7x57, and it worked great.

BTW, great cartridge choice on the 7x57! Someday I hope to have one myself!

No experience with that specific caliber, but in other calibers Remington Core-Lokt bullets have done much better than Winchester. For range purposes, the Prvi Partizan is very accurate, have not killed a critter with their bullets yet..

This is a great caliber. I have shot two elk with my Mod 70 with no problem. Every rifle is different as to which brand works the best. I used Federal 175 gr on the elk. For deer I use 140 gr CoreLokts.

Decide which weight bullet you want to use and buy one box of ammo. If you get good groups then you can stick with that brand.

Thanks, guys. I was leaning toward the Remington before I posted. I am going to shoot the box of Winchester today, but unless it's way more accurate, I'll stick with Core Lokt.

If this rifle still has its issue sights, don't be surprised if shoots those light-bullet commercial cartridges VERY high at 100 yards...

It still has its sights, and it does tend to shoot high. Would the heavier Sellier & Bellot bullet (I think it's 170 gr) eliminate some of that? Thanks.

Yep, I too would go with whichever is more accurate. That being said, I'd try the Federal Power Shoks too. If they, or the Winchesters are just as accurate if not more than the Remingtons, I'd go with one of those two over the Remingtons in a heartbeat.

I bought Prvi for my 6.5x55 before I started reloading. I cannot say they outperform the super-X but the accuracy and performance on deer have been VERY impressive (sub MOA and DRT deer). I imagine their 7mm Mauser ammo would be up to the same gold standard. Cannot really go wrong for $13 a box!

Core Lokt is the most accurate factory cartridge for my 7mm08 (remington 700). In fact it took a while to develop handloads that would outshoot that stuff.
