I have a Remington rolling block and would like some information on it regarding original factory finish. I believe the breech was not blued, but other parts were. Is this correct?

The wood on this seems to be good walnut. I would like to know the original finish of the wood. I did not think it had a varnish on it but I am not sure.

I inherited from my father and he got it from my grandfather. The original blued areas are good for its age and I have no intention of re bluing. Even the unblued breech is clean with only light staining. The rifle will not be sold so is not subject to the do not touch that might be recommended.

I want to protect the wood where the butt stock has been worn through finish and would like to repair (refinish) it as original. Would like help with original finish. I have used Formby's Conditioning Furniture Refinisher to clean and remove old varnish to great effect on old wood before. If there was no varnish on the wood originally it won't do much but clean.

I believe that the breech was blued.Receiver was color case hardened and the barrel was blued. The stock was varnished.I have one in .32 rimfire in very good condition, and it's a great little rifle.

Thanks for your information. I do not plan in doing anything to the metal since it can be protected by keeping it clean and oiled.

I went to the Remington web site and under their FAQs found where they recommend either Boiled Linseed oil or Tung Oil to preserve the wood grain. I have used Tung Oil before on old wood. It came out beautiful. It depends on the particular piece of wood since Tung oil is clear, and brings out the natural wood. It does soak in and preserves the wood.

One bonus is it takes repeated coats to get the luster you want, so you just stop when the finish is where you want it.

Using Formby's refinisher to remove the old varnish and dirt is very unlikely to remove any original stain.

I have a Model 4 that I inherited (it was actually the first gun I ever shot)and I really would like to restore it.

It's missing the butt plate and the front sight.

Does anybody know of a collectors site or any place to find old parts??
