I've got a 700 22-250 that has a pretty much crap trigger from the factory. I did the adjustment try, but it's still way bad. My 7mm turned out great. I have a chance to get a factory 40X trigger assembly that has the screw sticking out the bottom. Anybody know how low it can safely go, or should I just get something like a Jard??

Just seems like a waste to put $140 into a new $500 rifle if I don't have to.

I did my 700 in 22-250 and the results were great. What's bad about it, creep, weight, overtravel? It might need to be honed. I wouldn't buy a new one until you've really worked on the factory one.

I just spent a few minutes. To me, method of disassembly wasn't immediately obvious. I'd be more than happy to work it over if I could see how to get it apart. Looked like it was riveted together, but right then I didn't have a ton of time.

Mainly the weight. No matter how far I turned out the screw, it was still heavy. I've found that using a sledge hammer as a firing method tends to degrade group size.

I suspect it's dragging in the sides of the housing, but I couldn't tell. I hosed it down with teflon lube so it should be plenty well lubed.

Sounds to me like your not doing something right in the first place. A Remington trigger adjustment should do very well if done correctly. Take it to a gun smith.

well, that's kinda the reason I posted this. The other 700 worked out great. Smooth, crisp, and fairly light (or at least reasonable)

If I have to pay a gunsmith $50 to tell me the trigger is crap, I'll spend $89 and get a Jard or a little more and get a Jewell.

I had a 700 22-250 from back in the 60's. Trigger was exceptionally good. Sold it, and I'm trying to duplicate it now.

I just had a 1lb Jard varmint trigger put into my new 700 VSSF and it's awesome. Breaks perfectly at just slightly over 1 lb. Save yourself a lot of frustrations and just go with an aftermarket trigger. You won't regret it.

Guess I'll look into both of those. Something just seems inherently wrong about spending 25% of the cost of the whole rifle on a trigger, but if that's what it takes I guess I'm good to go. Maybe a cheap trigger is what lowered the cost in the first place. Just ticks me off that one trigger works out well and the other one seems hopeless.

Thanks

do you have a link to the adjustment procedure? I have been searching and I havn't found it yet.

I have a 700p in 300 win. mag I mest with it a bit and got it down to abou 2lb. Last month I had a smith hone and tune. It's about 1.4 - 1.6 lb with zero overtravel. He could go down to about 6-8 .oz on the stock trigger but it's not practical or safe, unless your shooting purpose built benchrest. And it's a liability issue to go below 2.5 lbs in most SWAT built guns.
