I got tired of trying to find information about this ammo's performance online so I decided to test it myself for penetration and expansion. For those that don't know, this is the Remington "value brand" Semi-jacketed .38 +P hollow point ammo found at Wal-mart.

My test method was as unscientific as it gets. I lugged 6 1 gallon jugs of water out to the back of the property, lined them up on a table and plugged a round through them with my 2 1/4" SP101 from about 6ft away .

First lesson learned... when doing this, be prepared to get wet! lol

As to the bullet, it actually penetrated quite well. It went completely through 3 jugs and split the plastic on the back side of the 4th one. Expansion however was pretty unremarkable with the recovered bullet only expanding to .386 diameter. The bullet also fragmented leaving 2 large fragments in the second jug.

With it's good penetration I'm sure that this round would do the trick if placed properly, but I will be looking for another round with better expansion to carry as my primary load in my S&W .38 Airweight and I'll be sticking with my usual .357 125gr Golden Sabers for the SP101.

Here's a pic of the bullet and fragments. It's not a great pic but it's good enough to give you the idea of what the bullet looked like.
