How do I remove a barrel on a Winchester 1897? Anyone done it before?
1897 take down model. I want to remove the pitted barrel and replace it with after market and having some trouble. Actually haven't really tried yet I'm in no rush so thought I would ask around first.

actually replace the barrel in the barrel assembly, not just "take it down". it doesn't look terribly complicated but i have not done it before.

Hi, Lobo9er,

Takedown for cleaning is pretty simple, and I assume you know how to do that. (If not, see the second link below.) But removing the barrel from the extension is trickier, since it is very easy to mess up the extension.

Here are a couple of sites that may be of interest. Go to the end of the second (the pdf) and read carefully. The first site shows a tool (I used a slightly different one) that will make the job easier and reduce the chances of bending or twisting the extension, which is not very sturdy. (JMB assumed that anyone wanting to go beyond simple cleaning was a factory expert or skilled gunsmith.)

i can't read PDF'S lol B4 the barrel project is started it seems i just found another project, making my computer PDF compatible

Replacing the barrel on a 97 involves much more then just unscrewing it and screwing in a new one.

The action take-up sleeve holds the threaded barrel inside the barrel extinson.
There is also a headspace ring in the rear of the chamber held in place by two little screws.
You will need a new headspace ring, and a chamber reamer to ream it to match the barrels chamber after you put it in.

In all, if you don't have the tools and knowledge, it is not a DIY job.

Thank you rcmodel
to be honest so far that is the most info on the subject i have been able to find. As of now my game plan is to just remove the old barrel if I think I will be able to with out trashing anything. Save me a little money with a gunsmith. Also I am in no rush so maybe just one step at a time see how we do.
