I have a cheap bolt action .22 that I have removed the bluing from the receiver and barrel. I have been using steel wool and emery cloth. I polished the barrel and receiver the way I want it. My question is how can I remove the bluing from the bolt, the bolt channel, and chamber without sandblasting or anything like that? Is there some household chemical I can use? If I can I don't want to have to buy bluing remover or anything like that. It's just a cheap .22 that has just turned into a little project gun. I want every part that was blued to be removed so I can polish the rest. it looks a little funny with a blued bolt but polished barrel and receiver.

Blueing Remover

I know you New England guys are che-uh I mean- frugal, but if you want to take off that old blueing, spring $4.80 for a little bottle of Birchwood Casey's blue and rust remover. Or, go to the auto supply store and buy some Evap-O-Rust which is the best stuff ever and will also derust those old tools, chains etc lying around.

:neener:George I am forced to be cheap. Being a college student does that to ya. But It worked pretty well with what I came up with. I used the metal polsih I had polished the barrel and receiver with. I just put it on a buffer and it only took a few minutes to remove the bluing and get a shine. The chamber is obviously still blued because I can't get a buffer in there, but I don't care about the chamber anymore because it's a small area and I'm pleased with the results. And my cherap ass didn't have to spend a dime. Just the way I like it!

Chris is correct. Muriatic acid will definately work.It is a very strong acid. Must be washed off liberally with water. Do not use indoors, the fumes are potent. If you are not familar with acids, leave it alone.

Why

The bluing is a protective finish.

It will rust, however if you take to pieces of the same steel polish both and Blue one (this should be the hot process) and leave the other one white. the one in the white will discolor long before you see any clouds in the blued piece.

That said soda/cola/softdrinks will remove bluing/rust.

Anything that will remove rust will also cloud the polished finish already done to outside.

For a clean oil free piece of steel, contact with any chloride based acid (and most other acid/blue removers) will remove the bluing on contact (it's to early in the AM, I can't get mind around Nuereatic) and soon after contact start to etch the surface.
