Did a search and turned up dry!?!?!

I know this is very basic stuff, but I am kind of resporing this old 22 for a friend and I can't really do a nice re-bluing unless I remove the iron sights and band sand in on a lathe. Since this is not my rifle I don't want to risk messing it up, so before I clamp it on my vise and tap 'em out with a brass punch, I'd like to hear from your best techniques to remove and re-install the front and rear open sights w/o damage.

I though about buying one of those universal flat sidewall pistol slide jigs from Midway/Brownells but I wondered how effective they'd be on a cylindrical barrel... maybe I should just get one for my pistols but heck, they are $100 and I have no plans to mess with 'em any time soon!

Apply penetrating oil first and let it set for a while.

Then, try a hardwood (Dowel rod) or nylon punch first.

If that doesn't work, progress to the brass punch.
Color the sight with a lead pencil first to keep brass marks from sticking to them.

Most all .22 sights are not very tight, and will come right out.

Always drive sights & pins Out = left to right.

Back In = right to left.

BTW: If it happens to be an old Winchester pump, the mag tube bands are not really dovetails like they look like they are.
You have to turn them 90 degrees to get them out.

rcmodel,

This is exactly what I needed! thanks

But, at the risk od sounding really dumb, when you say from left to right, you mean when looking from the shooters side (not the target), right? I know it is kinda obvious but better safe...

It is a Winchester 69A. It shoots sweet! I wished my friend would sell it to me. I'll have to be content re-freshenning it up. :)

Tryin' to get a peep sight. This Win 69A has a 15/16" round receiver with a 0.5" separation screw holes. Them Lymans 57EW are few and far between. Heard a guy installed a Mossberg peep. Emailed customer support (or lack of it thereof) and haven't yet responded. :(
