I am wanting to clean up my old and battered Mossberg 500.

the barrel has rust on it. Not badly, especially not on the easily oiled areas, but rather underneath the ribs on top of the barrel.
Usually I use CLP or Hoppes, but we also have this product called uh ... lemme look ... "Barricade." It prevents rust supposedly, but will it remove it, too?

What would you do? there's small amounts of rust on an old shotgun and all you have is common gun supplies and a dremel. Not that I want to break out the dremel >.<

Used gently, it will not hurt the finish.....For under the ribs, I would use a bronze/brass toothbrush style brush.

The steel wool method works very well for light rust spots. I have done it on more than a few firearms and haven't had the steel wool damage the bluing.

I've done literally hundreds of guns with 0000 steel wool and oil and as long as you have the slightest notion of what "gentle rubbing" means you will not hurt the bluing.

While it doesn't hurt to be cautious, good bluing can withstand more than just a "gentle rubbing" with oiled 0000 steel wool. The first thing I do when I remove newly blued gun parts from the stop bath is vigorously rub the parts with heavily oiled(I use WD-40)steel wool.

You're right, but if you don't put some qualifier like "gentle" in, some internet knowitall will point out that if you rub with 0000 steel wool as hard as you can for 10 minutes it can cause the bluing to fade slightly.

I tried it once on a scrap barrel and it took 10 minutes of white knuckle rubbing to get the bluing to fade enough to notice.
