I have a friend who has interest in a mp5..the automatic one. He doesn't own a gun, but is digging around in the firearm world. He wants to handle and shoot a mp5 first, without having to deal with all the licensing. Is there a place that rents automatic rifles in Texas? Secondly how hard is it to get the c&r license? I've read stories that sometimes it's at the whim of whomever needs to sign off your forms.
 
For an MP5 he would have to spend over $20,000. The Title 3 permit would be $200 and would take over 6 months to clear with the FBI.

For the price, he could get over 20 rifles or pistols, and all of them would be more reliable than the MP5.
 
Pasadena Gun Center in houston has M16, Uzi, MP5, Greasegun, and Thompson for rent. Last time I was there it was $25 to rent 2 MGs and you pay for the ammo.

Most transferable MP5s are hovering around $13,000-$17,000 right now. The NFA branch of the ATF is smokin' through approvals right now. The local class 3 dealer said form 4 approvals are taking around 2 weeks!!! My first transfer took damn near 7 months a few years ago.

MP-5's are currently in the $13,000 to $16,000 dollar range, they are still a couple of years away from 20 grand.

There is no "title 3 permit". There is a $200 Tax stamp to process a Form 4.

I just had a transfer go through in 31 days, a far cry from 6 months. And the FBI only checks your fingerprints, everything else is done by the NFA branch of the BATF.

MP-5 unreliable? I can say without any shred of doubt that you have never fired, or probably even handled, an MP-5 if you think they are unreliable. :rolleyes:

To the thread starter, your friend is going to need deep pockets, and a CLEO willing to sign the Form 4's for him to do this.

I have a fair amount of time on an MP-5, and I can only begin to guess why people are paying these ridiculous prices for them.

They are neat and all, but that kind of money can easily get 2, or even 3 transferable MG's in all manner of calibers. With some careful shopping one could get an UZI, and an AC556 for less than the cost of a single MP-5. And with a couple of conversion kits could be shooting four different calibers out of just two guns!
 
Actually I have fired one, but I can say that my one time shooting it doesnt count because the range I go to never cleans any of the guns. The 3 guns I used all has some sort of problem, and they were because each gun had a THICK layer of carbon buildup. Im never renting a gun from there again.

Sounds like he has a serious case of Hollywood-itis. While the MP5 is very controllable as FA weapons go, it is still a machine gun and not a good weapon to learn with. He needs to start with something a bit less exotic and less intimidating. Like I said, the MP5 is very controllable, but one needs to have some experience under their belt before they are ready to rock'n'roll.

I was shooting for a long time before I got a chance to play with real live machine guns, and I felt like a total newbi when that M1921 Thompson unloaded 20 rounds before I could say "wow!". The recoil impulse of .45 ACP is pretty mild in a 13 pound carbine-until they're popping off at 16 rounds per second!
 
Go to AR15.com and hit the Hometown forums section. Pick your state and start getting to know folks. ARFCOM'ers regularly hold local shoots which feature all types of Class 3 weapons. We had one shoot near Richmond a month ago that featured everything from 9mm sub-machine guns to a Browning 30cal belt fed machine gun.

ARFCOM local shoots are events not to be missed! There is a small one coming up in VA in two weeks and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to spray and pray. Nothing wastes good money quite like a full auto weapon! :D

I rented an MP5 at a fire department benefit shoot. I'm not sure why MachIVshooter is carrying on about "not good to start with" given that I hit EXACTLY what I was aiming at whilst in the throes of full auto on my first try. I came away hugely impressed with the design which allowed the aforementioned feat to happen. Please to note it's a friggin 9mm not a 50BMG so control shouldn't be made out to be such a big deal. My most lasting impression of the MP5 was that the sights were simply ideal for the guns intended purpose. That said, I'm not wealthy enough to consider purchasing one. So I live a little vicariously through folks like your friend.
