Is the 629DX the only 44m revolver, S&W makes, with replacable front sights? Or is there another version of the 29/629 that offers it? Im looking for a 44 mag with a Patridge front sight, instead of that ramp with colored inserts. Thanx-

The 44mag mountain gun I had was a pinned front sight, so it too would be replaceable. I beat that gun up pretty bad with heavy loads back when I was tough:rolleyes: and the front sight flew off to never never land every once in a while. Recoil was rather violent, much worse than a 454 for instance, in a gun that light with nuclear loads. Since then I have not been a big fan of the pinned sights on a S&W big bore. The longer barrels and the heavier guns should minimize the shock on the sight pin, but it does break sometimes and come off if. Just something to consider.

I think most all 629s of any version have replaceable front sights. For "classic" no tools replaceable sights you can get them by calling S&W Customer Service or going to www.jackweigand.com/interfs.html

Here is a replacement Weigand Patridge on my 625PC:

For pinned front sights, you can again get them from S&W or www.brownells.com has most sizes and styles available.

Here is a Brownells replacement Patridge on one of my 25-5s:

Good Luck...

AFAIK, the front sight blades on S&W revolvers have always been pinned. But on most guns, the pins were polished down and blued and were visible only under with careful scrutiny or under magnification.

My 629PP Classic 44 has the front patridge sight. In fact, I sent it to S&W and had it replaced with the "white dot" patridge sight. They also replaced the rear blade with a "white outline" blade. Call S&W customer service: 1-800-331-0852, 8A-8P EST. Or on-line: [email protected]. They are very helpful.

Smith and Wesson has used at least two systems on revolvers that have adjustable rear sights:

1. The front blade is separate, and pinned to the ramp.

2. The blade in integral to the ramp, but the ramp is pinned to the barrel rib.

Usually, but not always, the pin(s) were polished flat, and can't be seen except under close examination.

Front sights on fixed sight models are often part of the barrel forging, but again there are exceptions. Pinned front sights will often be found on non-standard barrel lengths.

I have a 29 Classic made around 1994 that has the user interchangeable system; the front sight has a base that fits in a spring-loaded slot in the base. To take it out, just slide it back slightly and lift it up. S&W sells several sights (patridge, gold bead, etc), and I bought a patridge to go with the red ramp that came on the gun. The Classic Deluxe models came with several front sight blades as part of the package.
