Gator has it right on a Federal level.... however, state law may have further regulations/laws on the matter.
For example: In NY to possess a gun, it must be on your license.... if it is the same make/model/SN then no new paperwork need be done and it can go directly back to you. However, if there is any change in make/model/SN then it must go through an FFL and be placed on your license by the county pistol clerk.....
We don't what state you are in, so that could make a difference.
