replacing an m1 garand barrel..

hey guys,

got an m1, and thinking about maybe replaceing the barrel on the garand instead of continuing my next build. the rifle is in good shape, but the bore, after being cleaned real good, dosent look like its in tip top shape. i havent really been able to shoot the rifle alot, so i dont know how well, or bad it will shoot, but being me, i am always thinking about the what if's.....

where can i get the barrel replaced? anyone here that knows how to do it, or can recomend a shop to get it done?? dont have the funds right now, just looking into how much i could be looking at, (doing my homework) so i can start saving up. thanks guys, brian.

a couple more questions....

what types of ammo work well in the m1. i hear to stay away form commercial ammo. and to use mil-surp ammo. does golden bear, or american eagle ammo cualify as mil-surp?

also, as to adjustable gas systems. would this make it acceptible to shoot commerical ammo, since the gas system can now be taylored to the cartridge? or should you still stay clear of commericla even with the adjustabl gas system???

You can find a schuester (probably spelled wrong) adjustable gas plug online, all you have to do is search for it. Krieger makes the best match barrels for the garand.

Before you replace the barrel, get some match loads with 168 grain Sierra bullets and shoot some rounds for groups.

A lot of M1 barrel had corrosive ammo through them that darkened the bore, but won't affect accuracy a great deal.

Epoxy bedding the rifle can make a huge difference as well.

I'm not sure how bad the bore is by your description of "...dosent look like its in tip top shape", but you might want to shoot it a bit more and see if the barrel is really kaput.

I've seen some M1 barrels that had some VERY dark bores, but still shot reasonably well. Sometimes I may be something as simple as a dinged muzzle that is causing poor accuracy. I'm not sure what kind of cleaners you've used on this barrel, but give JB Bore Paste a try. It might take several applications, but it can work wonders.

If the barrel is really kaput, replacement cost can vary, depending on the barrel you get. Take a look at the Criterion M1 barrels, which can be had for around $180. A knowledgeable gunsmith can probably install for about $50

Whoa, full stop here...

Bore looks kinda bad, but haven't shot it much? Get out and shoot some groups at 100 yards and just see what it does before doing anything. You might be surprised. If I can put 10 shots in a 4-5" or smaller group with milspec ball ammo I'd be happy and leave it be.

Factory .30/06 ammo is fine for an M1 rifle, provided you avoid any loading with a bullet heavier than 168 grains and anything marked "light magnum" or something to that effect. UMC, USA and AMerican Eagle 150 grain FMJ works great, it's what the CMP uses for the Garand matches.

Federal GM match in 168 and/or 175 will work fine as well and should be the benchmark for accuracy in your rifle. Military surplus M72 or M2 ball would be fine as well. I would avoid anything steel cased.

Shot a couple hundred rounds through it, shoot for groups with some Federal GM match and tell us how it shoots.
