Writing an article, and in order to complete it, I would appreciate if you could provide cylinder lengths of following revolvers:

- Ruger NM Blackhawk, cal. 41 Magnum
- Smith & Wesson Model 57 or 657, cal. 41 Magnum
- Smith & Wesson Model 29 or 629, cal. 44 Magnum
- Ruger NM Blackhawk, cal. 45 Colt

Regarding Ruger NM Blackhawk revolvers, I need dimensions from large frame, not from those smaller Flattops.

Please specify if you are measuring over inserted case, lake on picture, or without inserted case.

Thanx!

Sorry. I wish I could help. I don’t own any of those…Oh wait, is that a shopping list? :D
Not at this moment, but 41 Magnum and 45 Colt Ruger Bisley will be in next year or two. As a mater of fact, I had both, and foolishly sold them. Now, I am kicking myself for selling them BEFORE finding replacements. Learn from my mistakes...

As I mentioned, I am in process of writing an article. Trying to put on paper my vision how reloading manual should look and data it should have, as well as methods of testing loads. But that is another story and will post on this forum later on.

From a fan of reloading manuals, thanks in advance. That being said, why rely on others measurements? An editor would consider such information second-hand. For the sake of accuracy, it would be best to perform the measurements yourself.

I have them all, let me drop the minions off at high school and I will measure them with and without ammo.

Stay safe.

29-2 Pinned and Recessed = 1.745 with no cartridge
57 no dash Pinned and Recessed = 1.751 with no cartridge

I don't have a Ruger Blackhawk. I hope this will help.

Ok, using a Dillon dial caliper my best measurements are:

Blackhawks:
.41: 1.671. 1.728 w /ammo
.45: 1.703. 1.756 w /ammo

S&W 29-4, not pinned nor recessed: ( A mountain gun and 6.5 powerport had same numbers.)
.44: 1.706. 1.766 w /ammo

57 no-dash, P&R:
.41: They were same as above with or without ammo.

Here are a couple others that may be fun to compare:

Old Vaquero:
45 Colt was same size as Blackhawk .45 Colt.

Redhawk .41:
1.755. 1.808 w /ammo

Super Redhawk .454:
1.760. 1.813 w /ammo

Blackhawk flattop .44 Spl:
1.613. 1.665 w /ammo.

Here's mine.

629-6 5" full underlug 1.705"
629-3 8-3/8" full underlug RECESSED 1.758"

Want to guess the amount of the cylinder recess? 0.060"

Many thanks to all, I appreciate your efforts!

Nice collection Riomouse. BTW, I am just truing to find out which model, among S&W and Ruger revolvers in 41 Magnum and 44 Magnum has shortest cylinder. As for Ruger 45 Colt NMBH (large frame), this revolver is the only one that is wide spread and could be used for heavier loads up to 30 000 PSI.

Thanks, it’s been a long-term hobby.

I will say that the S&W Model 69 L-frame .44 Magnum has a cylinder that is 1.670” long, which is shorter than any of the N frame ones so far.
