I'm putting together a target rifle that's still light enough (relatively speaking) to carry out in the woods and hunt with on occasion. Basically I'm picturing a fairly traditional looking rifle with a varmint profile barrel that I can attach a bipod too when I'm target shooting. After a lot of thought and research I think I want to build it around a remington 700 action, for the versatility, in 7mm-08. The problem is it looks like Remington no longer makes their SPS Varmint in that caliber so I'm going to have to find a donor action and rebarrel, which is okay with me.
So here's my question: When looking for a donor rifle, do I need to find one in 7mm-08 or can I use something in a different caliber? Could I simply rebarrel a .308 or a .243 (same basic case for all three right?) or would that not work? If that would work what other calibers would I be able to use that would only require a barrel swap to work?
