Get a range bag, they are not that expensive and are very handy for that type of stuff.

I have two, one small and one large Midway one. The small one is perfect for carring muffs, ammo, tools, glasses, drinks and other stuff with. It is about 12 inches wide, 8 inches high and 5 inches deep.

Just don't do what I do and put 25 lbs of ammo in it. (LOL) I also use it (the small one) as my ammo bag when taking the big one to the range (outdoor) for a all day shoot.

I'm kinda like you, I had cases that just didn't hold the stuff I wanted held with the rifle instead of in my range bags. I never thought I'd spend so much money on one, but I went with a really nice one with a silly tacticool sounding name- Voodoo Tactical Something er other for $103 at MidwayUSA. It's got a divider for two rifles, which I only tote two when there's a mixed high power and running target match. When I only carry one rifle, there's plenty of room for muffs, eyes, scope, tripod (for spotting scope) and a range rod (that's just on the inside). The oustside pockets are roomy enough for quite a few magazines, ammo, a pistol or two if I had the need to haul one out, ECI's, gloves, and my position slings for high power.

On the outside, there's GI type shoulder straps- they attach like the old ALICE pack rucksack straps. There's another strap that comes with it, not 100% sure what it's for, but it works pretty good as a single shoulder strap.

It's made better than most any I've seen sold locally, heavy duty zippers, 42" long, and I don't know what else to tell ya. Here's a link: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/3140219512/voodoo-tactical-deluxe-padded-weapons-rifle-gun-case

Another case I have that works pretty darn good is a padded, soft sided guitar case with 2 shoulder straps. It doesn't scream "Here's another snuff dippin cowboy runnin around with a rifle!" And it has a ton of inside space, and a zip-off accessory bag that zips to the outside that's pretty roomy too. Might check guitar shops for one of those.

The thing about huge gear bags/ cases with lots of pockets is that they are get too heavy. Psychologically we believe if it fits it works. Then we discover there really isn't a comfortable way to hump that dang thing. My very expensive multi-cam double rifle zip case is an excellent example. I'll hang onto it, but I won't fill it up and tote it too far.

Get a separate case for the weapon, and a good quality assault pack for the goodies. I just acquired a bitchin 5.11 messenger style assault pack that holds everything for a shooting trip, for handgun and rifle. I figure one thing goes over the shoulder and one thing in the hand.

I also have two midway range bags one the medium the other large. I usually take the medium when I take 2 hand guns and a rifle as well as 100 rounds for each or so. The large is really large so it is used as a bug out bag I keep either in my truck or in the house.

I have 3 of those Voodoo Tactical rifle cases and I like them. I payed 60 a piece for mine 4 years ago they sure have gone up.

Yeah, nothing like a range bag that you need a hand truck to move it with. But I love my big Midway bag anyway. Midway has a large selection of tactical rifle cases that might fill your needs.

I bought a voodoo tactical 2 gun, 46" padded case about a year ago. Last month I picked it up by one of the backpack straps and the stitching pulled out. The case was loaded with 2 AR15's (one a 24" bull barrel) and 300 rds of ammo in mags. Contacted them through their website, and got a replacement in a little over a week. I thought it was great customer service. They really stand behind their product. By the way, the scope and the EOtech on my rifles held zero, even after the drop.
