I'm kinda like you, I had cases that just didn't hold the stuff I wanted held with the rifle instead of in my range bags. I never thought I'd spend so much money on one, but I went with a really nice one with a silly tacticool sounding name- Voodoo Tactical Something er other for $103 at MidwayUSA. It's got a divider for two rifles, which I only tote two when there's a mixed high power and running target match. When I only carry one rifle, there's plenty of room for muffs, eyes, scope, tripod (for spotting scope) and a range rod (that's just on the inside). The oustside pockets are roomy enough for quite a few magazines, ammo, a pistol or two if I had the need to haul one out, ECI's, gloves, and my position slings for high power.
On the outside, there's GI type shoulder straps- they attach like the old ALICE pack rucksack straps. There's another strap that comes with it, not 100% sure what it's for, but it works pretty good as a single shoulder strap.
It's made better than most any I've seen sold locally, heavy duty zippers, 42" long, and I don't know what else to tell ya. Here's a link:

Another case I have that works pretty darn good is a padded, soft sided guitar case with 2 shoulder straps. It doesn't scream "Here's another snuff dippin cowboy runnin around with a rifle!" And it has a ton of inside space, and a zip-off accessory bag that zips to the outside that's pretty roomy too. Might check guitar shops for one of those.
