Rifle Help

im in the market for a good rifle to go pig hunting with,
im looking into to what type of rifle to get, and everywhere i look is no help,
i have always wanted a leveraction, but i dont know what caliber i should get,
i want to be able to hunt pigs and some times goats with it,
i already own a deer rifle which is a rugar M-77 .243
(Which i got for a steal due to this horrible econ)
i also have a couble .22 semi auto and bolt rifles also a 38 revolver,
so a lever action would be different,

i have shot a couple pigs with a marlin 45-70, but i dont think i need something that big, i do like tha marlin 308, but any sugestions would be very helpful

well if it is a lever action you are set on get a 30-30. Within 200 yds will hit as hard enough to bring down a pig.

If it were me 7mm-08 might be where I look; Good punch, reduced recoil.

If you are alright with open sights (aperture or otherwise), I would (and did) look into a Winchester (or Browning) 1895 chambered for .30-40Krag or .30-06Springfield. If you want something that is lighter, the .308 or .338 Marlin might be the ticket. I wouldn't overlook the .45-70Govt. (in an 1895) either, I don't consider it too much gun for pig (makes a bigger hole, but less meat damage than the aforementioned cartridges).

A Marlin lever gun chambered in .44 Mag or .45LC.

You can load the .45LC with 300gr bullets and push 'em out the end of the barrel at up to 1700 FPS using gas checks in a Win 94 so I expect the Marlin will handle that too. That's a load that will definitely knock down a pig.

I've never messed with .44 Mag out of a lever gun but one will take down a pig out of a pistol so I imagine it'll do so with full power 44 Mag loads out of a rifle.

I would recommend the Marlin 336 in either 30-30 or 35 Remington. With a low power 2-7x32mm scope like a Nikon ProStaff. With low rings, not see-thru rings.

This is what I was thinking too. I'm intrigued by these new rounds for the lever guns. Those laminate stainless Marlins sure look pretty too.

The only thing that you have to watch out for is the fact that they are new unproven rounds. I have little doubt that they are capable, and have suitable physical power (though I don't doubt that they fudged the numbers a little either), just wonder about their staying power. It could turn out to be the next SAUM/WSSM, though I doubt (and sincerely hope) that doesn't turn out to be the case.

Funny, me and a guy at work were discussing hunting feral pigs today...I mentioned that my M44 Mosin would make a hell of a close-up brush gun, especially with the 203gr Brown Bear loads, bayonet already fixed. If the shot doesn't kill the oinker on the spot and you get charged, that...what, about 18"?...bayonet would give you a decent chance of avoiding having to experience what a pissed off sausage monster can do if they get hold of you (they have teeth!)...

That's why you roll your own amigo. Then you don't have to worry about that stuff.
You're right though. They haven't been proven all that much yet.
I never got the appeal of the short magnums or the ultra magnums, but I love leverguns, so I'm wanting to try the new ones. You're probably right about the company being overly optimistic about the stats too.

That is why I roll my own comrade. ...but not everyone does...or wants to. Besides it makes brass hard to acquire and expensive.

I'd bout guarantee that...but what company doesn't? They just took the best loading (ideal bullet weight, et al) and loaded it to a bit higher pressure. This is just conjecture, but I'd bet on it. That said, I bet it is still a great round, and have high hopes for both the .308 and .338Marlin. I hope they come out with a .35cal Marlin as well (with specs like the good ole' Whelen)...now that would be a great cartridge (or just make a Marlin in .35Rem. Mag.).
