Ok, I'm sick of shooting rifle from the busted bench rests that they require you use in both of the two (Lawrenceville and Forest Park) poorly lit ~75 FOOT "public" indoor rifle ranges in the Atlanta, GA area.

What are my options (if any) for an outdoor rifle range? The only "public" one that I know of is located in Temple, GA ~2 hour drive from the East side of Atlanta. I know there are "exclusive" (membership by invitation only) gun clubs in Covington and Roswell, however I lack the contacts to get in.

Aside from "buy 50 acres in the country," does anybody have any ideas? Is there some "secret" public rifle range closer than 2 hours to East Atlanta-metro?

Why the PM? Let us all in on the info!.

There is a WMA range north of Gainesville. I haven't been there, but am planning to go the weekend of Oct 13. Still, it would probably be a 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta.

I've been there several times. Nice range, about 75yds, covered benches. Can get crowded on the weekends. It would be quite a drive from Atlanta, tho. :(

There's an outdoor range in Cartersville, can't remember the name off the top of my head right now. It's kinda new. That would probably be a little closer, except you're on the east side of the city. Hmm...

GTSteves,

If you can remember that place in Cartersville, I'd greatly appreicate it. That would be close enough to my house to make that drive. Thanks in advance

I know of 2 public ranges on the east side of ATL. Ask if you need better directions.

Not sure if it's still open, but DeKalb Co. P.D. used to have there range open to the public (for a small fee). It has 100 and 200 yard ranges as well as pistol ranges. This range is located south of Lithonia (15 minutes outside of I-285)

Also Clybel WMA (aka Charlie Elliot) is open to the public for free. (It may require the purchase of a WMA stamp from a hunting/fishing liscense dealer, I'm just not sure). This range is located in/near Mansfield off of HWY 11 (45-60 minutes outside of I-285)

Thanks for the info everybody. Now I have some ranges to check out! Even the one in Cartersville is closer than Temple.

Anyone been to the outdoor gun range in Rasaca? What's it like? How long is the range?

Thanks.

I have been to Charlie Elliot a number of times. You do not have to pay anything, nor do you need a wma stamp. As long as your clean up our own brass, and your target is not plastic, wood or metal (Just the part being shot) you are good to go. Its usually very peaceful on the weekdays. Closes at sundown, and closed on Sundays.

I think it is Rock Creek or Rock River range in north Fulton. I'm not sure what they have but I know they have a 1kyrd range.

River Bend in Roswell? They are invitation only. You have to be vouched for by 2 members in good standing. I don't know anybody who is a member.

Gunsite Hills in Lexigton. Which is about 15 miles East of Athens. We shoot to 700 yards there. It is privatley owned and you have to make an appointment to shoot. The fellow that owns and runs it is a no non-sense and strict kind of guy, which is what I like. Try this: gunsitehills.com.

Do the WMA ranges allow pistol shooting, or is it rifle only?
If they do allow pistol, is it necessary to have a carry permit?

I live in Alpharetta and will try the range in Gainesville sometimes this fall. I tell you for a supposedly gun friendly state not that many ranges to shoot at. I would love to have a farmer slash land owning friend that would let me shoot.
