rifles under $600

A Stevens 200 is the best buy for the money. Spend the other $300 on glass. Changeable Savage barrels to change calibers for less than $150 bucks too. If you want a semi, gunbroker and others have near new 7400 Remingtons for $400-500. Nice Browning BARs for less than $600. MCgunner's post got it right.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter I picked up on sale in .30-06. It's a bit heavy, but it has a 24" barrel, a cut-checkered walnut stock that fits me well, is very accurate, very well made, and I really do like it.

Weatherby's Vanguard actions are made by Howa, and they're excellent. See http://www.legacysports.com/ for Howas sold under their own name with different stocks and other details.

"Remchester" is a slang term for "generic major-brand production rifle", from REMington and winCHESTER.:)

Sometimes "Remarchester" from Remington/Marlin/Winchester or "Brownchester" if it refers to FN's US brands. There are also other occasional variants like "brownmarlington" or whatever you want to make up.

In the last year I have purchased 3 rifles, all under $600.00. A savage 12fv .223, a 700 sps .270, and a 700 sps varmint .308. None of them are pretty and none have pretty furniture. All shoot very well, and I consider them a good purchase.

Ill also second that a bushnell banner is not necessarily a cheap scope but an inexpensive one, I happen to like the 6-24x that is on my .223. I cant compare them to a nightforce or anything but it has been very good for me for the $100 or so that I paid. I also have a nikons and leupolds too that are infact clearer and brighter near the higher powers, but were considerably more money too.

As other members here have mentioned before, caliber is as important as model and what it will be used for. And Savage barrell interchangeability is a definate plus in my book.

Yeah, Thanks peoples.
So Bushnell Banner scope is not necessarily "cheap". It's a good value for my first scope?
Nikon Buckmaster scope is good value too?

and...

Some of you seem to be saying maybe I should reconsider my "semi-auto" desire?...
I do eventually want a semi but maybe I'll hold off and get an AR style semi-auto later.

I've got some good info here so I'll do some more research and check this and other threads a little later.
Thanks again. Ned.

IF you don't plan to shoot a ton, the rem700 etronx is a huge bargain. you can still get them around $500, I think. at least, that's what i paid for two of them last year and year before last.

primers are outrageously expensive though, so if you shoot a lot, ammo will quickly eclipse the price of the gun.

Nikon Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield II are good scopes and good values. Don't have experience with the Bushnell.

Semiautos are great toys. Get one in a cheaper, lower-recoil caliber. I can't see a compelling reason to get an autoloading .30-06 unless you are hunting game that requires really fast multiple shots, like maybe tough boars that come at you even after being hit squarely. It's not an ideal plinker or anything.

Bolt guns are much easier to clean, too. The AR cleans a lot like a boltie, but it's a unique design.

bolt v. semi 308

I have an M1A Scout Squad it is pretty accurate. I bought it new, and it a a great rifle, I love the fast action of the semi auto. The cost new was very high, however.

Later I bought an older Savage Scout model in 308, bolt action with a modification to take M14 mags (albeit the mags are a bit modified). Follow up shots are not as quick, but not too bad.

The bolt action is a little more accurate consistency wise. I got it used, with a leupold scout scope for $400. The deals on used guns are out there, I found the savage on a dusty rack at a pawn shop.

For a truly FIRST rifle, I'm always going to recommend a .22 rimfire. Learn to use iron sights before moving on to a scope, and learn how to REALLY shoot. The principles are the same, so you might as well make trigger time affordable!

Beyond that, I'm with Sarduy and have to say a Mosin 91/30 or M44. That'll get you around 30-06 perfermance. An SKS can be a good choice too, but with a substantially lower powered cartridge.

If you want to go with a scope, I'd abandon surplus altogether and just get a newer bolt action. Keep in mind that the scopes on combo deals are usually junk, though...

I have the CZ 452 for my .22 needs.

The reason I want a 30-06 is because plentiful ammo due to the popularity of the round and a good friend who reloads and also has one.

I'm considering bolt now for the 30-06 and have not ruled out lever action or pump either.

Anybody have any thoughts on a lever action or the Remington 7600 pump. I'm looking for something reliable.

I think I'd rather have the pump over the lever action and iron sights are my preference until I get my "dream" bolt action rifle (narrowed down to the 7mm Mag for now) for hunting. Then I will get a high quality scope.

Wait till after hunting season, many hunters will bring back perfectly excellent firearms that just won't shoot. I got a Winchester model 70 compact Classic a few years back for a nice price and I removed the junky scope that was zeroed to shoot about 1 foot to the right and close to 2 feet low. I put a nice Leupold on it and it shoots very well. I paid about $399 for mine and put a $280 for the scope.

The economy is down right now, look in the pawn shops. One by me has more rifles in it than I've ever seen in it.

You might put an ad in your local paper, "looking for good rifle to hunt with". Might be suprised what may turn up.
