This is how I feel this morning.

I like to discuss current events in the news in a safe environment with those people who have and understanding of firearms and the firearm community.

Yet, when unfortunate events happen in the news, related to firearms, if its negative, a lot firearms forums or related sites lock the thread.

This leaves me to discuss the topic with people who often know nothing about firearms or the firearms community. Disqus, Twitter, Facebook - these are places that hostility ensues and the discussion simply breaks down or is non existent.

Now, I understand people don't like to have a conversation about events in the news that people feel, "wont help our cause." However, the opposition is sure as hell going to use it.

I am not naive to think talking about a negative current event in the news is going to "help" our cause, but we should be willing to have a conversation about it within the firearms community. A conversation to discuss ideas, feelings, and how to possibly prevent that negative thing from happening to someone else.

Does anyone know of a firearms community that doesn't lock threads concerning negative current events?

Those types of threads get locked not because meaningful discussion is out of place, but because there is often no meaningful discussion about it. Threads like that go something like this:

OP: x number of children have been gunned down by some maniac, police on scene!
1st reply: Get ready for the next round of gun ban proposals...
2nd reply: Better stock up on ammo while you can...
3rd reply: Liberal idiots got so many details wrong, they don't know if the shooter used a crossbow or a beltfed machine gun!
4th reply: (link to some conservative commentary blog or video)
5th reply: More laws wouldn't have prevented this tragedy, what do they expect to accomplish?
6th reply: YOU CAN PRY IT FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!

Lather rinse repeat.

Starting a thread that focuses on a meaningful response to such high profile tragic events, such as political rallies, fundraising campaigns, letter-writing efforts to sway local, state or federal politicians, those absolutely have their place. It is called the Activism subforum.

survivalistboards has lots of nuts, but lots of good discussion, especially about tragedies like that.

I could not have said it any better than Post #2.

What you are suggesting is an off topic area. We tried that one time and it fail in spectacular fashion. The primary reason was also explained to you when the first thread was locked.
