OK I don't mean to inflict any trauma on the fans of the Dragunov but the simple truth is that I can't afford a real one. That being said, I love the aesthetic of the rifle as well as the caliber it uses (7.62x54R).

After hunting around a little I've found the Romanian FPK which seems to be something akin to an elongated AK receiver with a bull barrel and dragunov furniture. I can accept that this isn't a common rifle however I am interested to know if this rifle shares anything in common with the AK "RPK" which appears to be the same sort of arrangement but without the Dragunov furniture.

Specifically I'd like to know how difficult it would be to obtain some spare magazines, and if the action is similar enough that it might share some parts with the ubiquitous AK-47. Given the price being asked on this site, I'm seriously considering it however I've not had the opportunity to play with one in person and I honestly don't know all that much about the AK (aside from it's distinguished service record).

Any input would be appreciated but please keep in mind that I already have a tackdriver Savage 10FP and a M44 milsurp beater. I'm primarily looking for a fun gun for range days. Plus I don't have a hi cap centerfire semiauto rifle. The AK, AR and SKS while fine rifles, don't really appeal to me as much due in part to their calibers and their ergonomics.

Thanks for your help!

For a long time, spare mags were very hard to come by. Places have them these days.

The Romanian PSL is essentially a long-action AK. It can be adapted to take AK stocks, though the handguard is obviously another story.

PSL

Do a search on "PSL" and you will get more hits.

I just bought one from a private party not too long ago.

Sexy? yes. Accurate? depends on many variables. Bull barrell? no, regular diameter. Opinions vary on whippyness. Kick in the pants? Hell yeah! :D

Function is identical to AK family. Ergonomics (length of pull) nearly identical to AK family except extra length at front.

Side by side components are very similar to SAR-1. Receiver cover stamping is identical except slightly longer at front end. Gas tube is identical at rear but longer at front. Bolt carrier is longer. Gas piston is longer. Bolt assembly is longer. Recoil spring assembly is longer and beefier. Receiver has more meat around the chamber. Trigger components are interchangeable.

Some are direct imports. Some are kits/rebuild, (quality varies). Some have issues with the scope rail being out of spec.

Magazines can be had but they're not cheap. Other parts and accessories available on a limited basis.

I'm happy with mine.

Good hunting!
