Rossi 92 - wood question

I got it to the indoor range today, raining so hard here the outdoor one was not an option. Put a couple boxes of 38 special though it and would have shot more if I'd had more ammo.

Yeah, I think they could have paid a bit more attention to detail on the lever and feed gate to make them more finger-friendly but other than that, it shot and handled better than I expected. Not crazy about the sights but those are easily changed.

Time to see about one in .44 magnum next :)

I ordered up the DIY Action Kit from Steves Gunz, that should smooth things out http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=6&zenid=l14f4g4nh7tllsltui663cgl61

Rossi M 92

I bought one new at the National Gun Show in Louisville last Saturday. Mine is SS with a mahogany stock. Paid $550 out the door. The gun was pretty - from a distance. I am a woodworker with experience in finishing fine cabinetry. The red-stained mahogany stock and forend were simply hideous. The wood looked like a junior high woodshop project that got a C-, and that would have been generous.

The first thing I did when I got the gun home was to take it apart and sand down, stain, and refinish the two mahogany pieces. I sanded them to #150 to remove the original finish and every trace of the old stain. After carefully removing all dust with a soft cloth, I then re-stained with a coat of Minwax Jacobean. When that was dry I stained it a second time with Minwax English Chestnut for some warmth and depth. I then applied 3 light coats of Minwax Satin Polyurethane, sanding lightly with #320 between coats to remove any raised grain, runs, or other imperfections. I was extremely careful not to sand through the clearcoat, especially near edges and on curves. Finally, after the third light sanding with #320, I applied Arrow Wood Finish with a soft cotton cloth. The more you rub (you don't want to slop it on) the deeper and glossier the shine. I got a bit of a workout rubbin' on those suckers! It took around 6 hours over a period of 2 days, but it now looks like a $750 gun. I would upload pix, but my iPad2 is a couple years old and will not upload to internet sites for some reason.

Getting it back together was another whole process, but that is how I found this site. I did a Google search for Rossi 92M assembly and found a thread from 2009 that gave me the key to getting the trigger assembly back in place. Glad to have found your site. And looking forward to going out and giving this gun a hot meal!

bikemutt -- I am jealous of what you paid for the rifle. I finally saved up to order one and buds and everyone else was out of stock. Ended up having to order one online for just over $500 for a blued model and I haven't received it yet. Bummer.

YUDoodat, I vote that you upgrade your phone and post some pictures! I'd love to see that stock.

Although I'm going to continue to be on the lookout for a lever in .357, my current need for another lever rifle just got... shall we say... delayed a bit...

Went to the big local gun show a couple of weeks ago with cash in hand to find a .357 lever and what did I find? I stumbled on a very pristine and un-molested Winchester 94 made in 1942. Yes, it's a .30WCF but I couldn't pass it up because the guy didn't know what he had. I'm smiling, but I'm still looking for a .357 lever.
