Ruger American .270 win

I just bought a Ruger American in .270 win.
Took the .270 over the .308 on the advice of multiple different gun shops
I have a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 mounted on it.
I just wanted some feed back about the rifle. This is my first hunting rifle. I've only really shot .22's and 12 gauges before. Anything suggestions about the current set-up or feed back on the rifle itself would be great. I did find a Ruger American .270 WSM for sale but when I went back the next day with cash to purchase it, it was already gone.

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks

I have never even fondled one of Ruger's new offerings (the American). I'm interested in hearing a range report, DJ343. Not on the caliber, but on the new American.

I mostly plan on using it for boar and occasional deer hunting. Out of all of the budget rifles I looked at it had the smoothest bolt. I'm new to bolt actions but it felt a lot smoother that the Marlin X7 and the Savage axis. Personally I think the stock feels pretty cheap but the bolt is smooth and the trigger is pretty crisp. I've only taken it to the range once but it was pretty accurate. I was getting a 2 inch grouping at 100 yds. It's my first rifle of this caliber so I'm not fully used to it. I've also only fired winchester super x through it so I believe the accuracy will improve as I get a feel for the rifle. The kick wasn't as bad as I heard it was going to be with such a light rifle. Overall I like it so far but again I haven't really done much shooting with higher calibers except a Sako 85 30-06 that belongs to a friend.

Maybe it was miss labeled but the label on the other rifle said .270 wsm and the guy at the shop was telling me it was a short mag. He even pulled out a box of it to show me the difference. Maybe it was some sort of limited stock rifle. I'm not sure

No the kick of a 270 win is not bad at all in a well fit rifle, well below 30-06 recoil in my book, though my 270 WSM steps it back up to 06 levels. The short mag is great, very comparable to the 7mm Rem Mag but if I had to do it all over again I would probably have another 270 Win.

It would be really hard to go wrong with either choice. Actually, with the current ammo situation the .270 is probably going to be easier to find ammo for, so if only for that reasons its a better choice right now.

Personally, I prefer 3-9x40 scopes for hunting, but I know some people prefer a bit more magnification. If you are expecting long shots the 4-12x40 may work out well.

If you ingore personal biases (and I admit I have a soft spot for the .270), any number of calibers are entirely sutable for that use, and the .270 is certainly one of them. Good luck with the new gun!

I sighted in my nephew's Ruger American in .308 and I like the rifle personally. It's lightweight, handles well and I like the look of it. It was also very accurate.
I don't think you will have any issues and .270 is one of the all time classic whitetail rounds. You're good to go.
