I have a new Competition target model with maybe 1000 rounds fired. The bolt stop pin is getting a bend in it from getting hit by the bolt. Is this normal?

The front edge of the bolt stop pin (where the notch is cut into it) looks as if the part was made in two parts and is separating along the center.

Is the pin defective?

sounds bad to me, I'd call Ruger. I have heard that they are very good to deal with.

You are right. Once I got their current number (the one in the booklet is wrong) I spoke to them and they are sending me a new one. The felow said it sounded like the part had missed the "heat hardening" it was supposed to get. Probably right, it does seem very soft to me.

I'm wondering if there was a bad batch of pins that came out. Yours is the third "pin breaking" I've heard of in the past 5 months or so. I can't recall ever hearing of one breaking before that.

At least with Ruger, they will replace any broken part any time.

yeah, I've never heard of that happening either, probably a bad batch of heat treated (or lack there of) parts. I have heard of that problem (bad/improper heat treating) with other parts on other guns before, so it sounds about right.

The person at Ruger did send me a new bolt stop at no charge. It looks fine and fits right in. The old one was getting so bent it was hard to get it to go through the frame. Not sure what happened to that one, but I'm sure the new one won't disintegrate.
