Great time to be asking as I have already bought and am now in the crummy "wait period."

I was too dumb to buy one of these neat looking little short .22 autos when they were AVAILABLE, so I found one and bought it.

Now I hear that they are problematical with extraction and ejection because the barrel is too short to develop the needed pressure.

Is this true? Is there a fix?

Or am I worrying for nothing? I've never had a Ruger be anything BUT excellent right from the box.

Any info? Like to hear from those who have had NO trouble as well as those who ...may... have.

This is the standard MkII .22 auto with the snubby FOUR inch barrel.

Didn't clarify. This isn't the standard ruger slim barrel since 1949. This one is the bull barrel and I....think..... 4" exactly.

Course it may still apply. Didn't even think of how reliable those old Rugers were.

I guess I just need to worry all during the STINKIN TEN DAYS!

Whassa matta me?
:D

My 4" bull barrel 22/45 MkIII is very reliable. All .22s will stovepipe once in awhile. Ammo brand can have a large effect on the frequency.

I've a MkII 6-7/8" taper barrel that is stovepipe city with Federal ammo but very good with Remmington. The Federal rims are maybe 0.001" smaller in diameter. I've replaced the extractor to no effect. Might change ejector next, I'm afraid it may be a bolt face cut tolerence so the Federal just doesn't quite get held tightly enough.

OTOH could be the next case of Federal bricks I buy have larger rims and start to work, although the 22/45 is fine with this ammo lot.

Ruger MK II P4 4" bull barrel...

youre getting one of the finest firearms on the market in its price range. i have had a P4 4" BBL for about 4-5 years now and it goes everywhere with me. its reliable, accurate, easy to care for, and i would not part with it for any amount of money. this is my baby:

to make the grip more grip freindly i bought some 3M grip tape and cut a small peice to fit on the front of the pistol grip and at the front of the trigger guard. this helps alot to prevent slipping from the grip.

When you buy it, ask the dealer to break it down and reassemble for you and let him watch you do it and help. once you get the hang of it, its dead simple. DO NOT remove the barrel from the grip frame too often, its not neccessary to clean it, and if done too oftern, it can loosen. dont worry about it.

A really good holster for it is an Uncle Mikes Side Kick #2 for 4" BBL auto pistols, make sure it says for auto pistols and not revovlers, i made that mistake once LOL. this holster fits like a glove.

I've found that CCI mini-mag HP's work the best in my MK II's, but you can give others a try. AVOID REMINGTON THUNDERBOLT!!!! very dirty ammo, it will gum up your gun quick and badly! the gun comes with two mags, but you will want at least two more, its alot of fun blasting away at tin cans or targets.

Dont worry, you made a great choice, i'll be wating to hear how you enjoy the Ruger... good luck! -Eric

I've also had serious leading issues with Remington Thunderbolt lately so I've stopped buying it for now. Too bad, as it was the one cheap ammo that worked well (freedom from stovepipes, very few mis-fires) in all my guns and the bullets don't leave gunk on your hands as you load the mags, too bad its gunking up the barrels :(

Ruger MKII

The Ruger Mark I and II pistols are some of the most reliable autoloaders on the market today. I have 3 of them and never had one problem with them.

The Mark II is the gun I love to hate. I've sold 2 of them because I got bored hitting everything I aimed at. Recently I got that old feeling again... and bought a 3rd one. Yep, a truly great gun!!

My 4 inch MKII is 100% reliable with Federal bulk pack ammo. If a .22 won't shoot Federal bulk pack, I find one that will.

What Wally said! :D I've had problems with bulk Fed, on ocasion. My gun runs great on bulk Rem. Stay away from the thunderbolt ammo!:barf:

I don't have the bull barrel but the 4" (or 4 3/8") pencil barrelled MKII. It has so far been 100% reliable with all ammo- quite a feat for a .22lr semi-auto pistol (especially when you consider that I've never taken it down for cleaning yet). It is quite fun to shoot. I think you should be fine.
