How about a thread dedicated to loads for the Ruger Old Army? I see lots of newbies (and I include myself in that category at this point) asking here and there about "what's your favorite load for ... ?" I'd welcome posts to this thread that detail what you're shooting and the results you've achieved. Pics, especially of other-than-round-ball bullets and targets would be particularly welcome.

I finally got one of my new-to-me ROAs to the range this past weekend. It was really a flintlock outing, but I brought it along to put a couple of cylinders through it. I discovered that #10 CCI caps are too small. First six trigger pulls only pressed the caps down; second six fired every chamber. Went to #11s after that and had no further failures to fire.

My load:
30 grains Goex FFFg
lubed felt wad
.457 Hornady round ball
CCI #11 cap

I'm thinking I need filler, as the plunger bottomed out every time and I didn't feel the powder/wad compressing. That, or I need to load with a loading stand; I bought a Tower of Power but haven't used it yet.

Only shot three cylinders, and I wasn't shooting for accuracy per se; rather, just getting a feel for the gun. However, I shot the third cylinder standing with a two-hand hold. All six rounds hit slightly high and left of POA and grouped about five inches at 25 yards, so I'm pretty pleased (read that "big grin" :D).

Uhh, I believe you're member #62 in The Official RUGER OLD ARMY Club on this forum...

Did you forget, or do you just not want to go back and read those posts?

We ought to add a modifications list.
This could gigantically backfire on me. I may find out that doing anything to my ROA was just a bad idea...kind of like marrying my ex. Or find someone crazier than I am with this.

We should include ammo loads....

Didn't forget ... and I've read through the Official Club thread. Just thought it might be helpful to have a dedicated thread on loads. If not ... never mind! :)

I'm sure nobody would mind - it might make it easier to find load data rather than searching through the other thread...if we could keep it to that topic...

Fill cylinder to mouth with whatever's on hand (FF,FFF, FFFF), mash a .454-.457round ball on top, squirt a little of whatever grease is handy (Bore Butter, tallow, beeswax, crisco) around the ball, cap and fire.

Make noise, smoke and holes!

Apparently not. Signal to noise ratio's already dropped too far to bother continuing. Oh well, live and learn.

the roa load list

1 30 gr pyrodex pellet 457 rb.............920 fps....42 grains 777 fff 255 gr hornady cowboy 1130 fps ,40 gr 777 fff 190 gr buffalo bullet ox wad 1154 fps...........all loads kill bears, hogs coyotes and deer dead one shot!

The second load is impressive... very high energy.

Are the 255gr Hornady hard to insert in the chambers?

How does one get 42 grains behind a 255 gr. bullet??? I think the max I got with a rb was very close to that? Maybe his chambers were deeper than mine.

255 hornady

actually ruger suggests a 454 diamiter conical the hornady cowboy fits like a glove and not oj s glove, with no bullet creep...........i think my chambers were deepened on both my r o a s,by the previous owner........ALSO I COMPRESS THE 777:eek:

I have developed a lunatic load that I love to shoot. I take a D/D 150 gr BigLube bullet, hollow point it. Then have a 110gr bevel based swaged full wadcutter behind it. I can get about 25 or so grains of Triple 7 under it. At close range it is surprisingly accurate.
I kinda like having a 12 shooter. It's easy to load, using a loader and the bevel base.

I'm having a swaged die made that I make a bevel based full wadcutter of just a bout any weight made.

I'm also likely to send the BigLube off to have the first 3 cavities hollow pointed, if practical.
