Someone at work is selling his Ruger P89 for $250. I'm seriously thinking about buying it. He says it's in excellent shape and that he's always cleaned it after shooting, but I have no idea how many rounds have been through it or any other details.

I'd appreciate any advice.

I owned one, recently sold it, and it was a GREAT 9mm. It shot really well, was heavy enough to have minimal recoil, and for the price... well, it's not a hi-point!

You will enjoy the weapon.

Got one that has been through thousands and thousands of rounds.... works like a champ

I don't own an 89 but I own two P90s and a P345. I picked up the P345 off a friend who couldn't manage his money. He paid $500+ at a gun shop brand new and two months later needed to sell it and when we were at the gunshop they offered him $125 and he was looking serious. I told him right there I'd give him $200 for it. They offerd him $150 for his Taurus PT1911 he bought from them for nearly $700, and I offered him $200. After a quick ride to the ATM I owned another two .45 ACPs.

So the only reason the P90s haven't been completely retired to the back of the safe is that the fiancee loves them, and I bought one solely for her as an engaged-to-be-engaged present that I'll turn over to her once were married(kind of poetic I got two because she'll be taking half of nearly everything I go). The first P90 she still shoots, it's had well over 2k of rounds through it and I don't know if it has to do with me always cleaning my guns after a trip to the range or they are just built that well, but in a sitting rested position I can put 7+1 inside a playing card at 20 yards once every couple of months(that's my personal accuracy test for the fiancee). And Ruger stands by its products. It's a shame they discontinued the P series but it's been said they will fix up the pistol nice for you on occassion.

Also I got the first P90 used and couldn't tell you how many rounds had been through it. Well I actually could, but I don't believe my uncle only saying he shot a few boxes through it. It was one of his favorites till his wife forced him to start cutting back on what he owned. He gave it to me as my 21st birthday gift, thought he was giving me my first gun ever(already had gotten a Ruger Security Six 4"). I don't love the gun but I don't think I'll ever be able to let it go to anyone else other than my Uncle's son(was born a year after my uncle gave me the gun) or a son my own one day hopefully. The 2nd P90 is the Fiancees, she doesn't like the P345, she doesn't like the 1911, and she doesn't like any of my other guns and I own a lot of guns.

For $250 it's hard to go wrong. Not the best gun for CCW, but doable if you buy a pant size one larger than what you are, but if kept in good condition and practiced with, it'll make a good SHTF at three in morning around the house gun and fun plinker. It's not a Glock, it is blocky, it may feel unwieldy at first, but once you get practiced with it will not disappoint.

Ruger semis in my opinion are guns that are not great per se, I couldn't see myself ever paying more than $400 for one, even the new S series. But once you have one, it's nearly impossible to ever justify selling one short of starving or paying for a kid's braces. The Ruger P345 is my run around .45 ACP and as long as I own it, will likely always accompany me when I don't want to have my Glock 20(it's a 10mm, and Glock is the only real platform to allow the 10mm to live up to its potential) in a shoulder holster. I'm getting ready to make a pocket holster for my P345(yes the pockets in most of my jeans will allow a gun such a size and no I don't dress gangsta'), so it won't only go with me when I can use a IWB or shoulder holster.

Excellent price if you like the trigger. I passed one at that price 6 months ago because I could not get used to the trigger pull. Went back there next day, it was gone.

I bought a P89Dc new in the early '90s for around $325 ,IIRC. It was very accurate and hip carried very well. The trigger was long and stiff in DA but very nice in SA which is how I shoot anyway. I would have it still BUT a guy offered me a near new Ruger Super Blackhawk,a Bianchi x15 leather shoulder rig and 100 rds of 240sp ammo. What can I say,I like .44s. I have since bought 2 P90s which carry and handle very much like the P89.

Good, solid guns for decent price. Not slim and light, but you can still work with them. Nothing fancy. Mags, holsters, and sights aren't too difficult to find. Not the best of trigger pulls, but for the value, it'll do.

I'd buy one for that price.

I'm a long time fan of the Ruger P series pistols. The P89 and P90 are among my favorites. At that price, its hard to go wrong.
