Has anyone been successful in getting this rifle to cycle with subsonic ammo? I haven't tried it yet but figured the piston would need to be in position 3 to have any chance of cycling.

If you have made this work, any load suggestions?

You will never get it to cycle. Also the trajectory will be similar to a lawn dart- sub rounds like the 308 have very limited utility.

why not just get a 300 black out. i am not much of a fan, but they do what you are wanting to do, and do it well, in a smaller lighter package.

also ar's are dirt cheap right now.

Doubtful it would cycle ever without gas modifications... Would be cool to come up with a gas block to use that would allow subsonic cycling AND supersonic function without being grossly over gassed. Maybe there is? I'd buy one if yes lol.

Yeah, I had a buddy tell me he decided to try hunting hogs with his subsonic .308 loads with a can on a bolt gun. Said you could hear the firing pin hit the primer and it was air gun quiet...but, it had no killing power at all. Like you said, 168 gr projectile dropped like a rock at short yardage and had so little energy there was virtually no expansion. Hogs are tough critters even with 2500 fps .308 rounds...but bring that to sub level, and its like shooting an elephant with a pellet rifle.

I'll probably load some subs just to play with the new can I ordered. I'll use the can when hunting for sure, but will use regular velocity hand loads for killing energy. Even with super sonic standard loads, killing a hog is all about shot placement anyway.

As I was saying above, I ordered a 762 can for hunting with standard velocity loads. I don't expect the Ruger SR 762 .308 to cycle with sub loads after reading these replies, but I'll for sure want to play with it just to see what it will and wont do. Maybe I should set the piston to "0" which is the off position. I'll cycle it manually knowing that is what will happen. I don't want to set it to position 3 (underpowered ammo) and get the spent case hung up in the chamber and possibly stuck. I personally feel if a hunter wants to try sub ammo for hunting, a bolt gun offers cycling reliability. In my case with a SR, I'd just plan to manually cycle. Manually cycling an SR seems a bit more cumbersome in the field than a bolt, but that's just me.....
