I own a Ruger Speed Six. It is a SS 2 3/4 weapon. I changed out the factory grips for some Pachmeyer "Grippers". I think it is the best 357 gun going for carrying CCW. It can handle the mildest to the wildest loads out there. It is super reliable and is a great size for CCW. So my question is..... what do you all think of this weapon?

My ex had one years ago. Back then concealed carry wasn't an option, so she just used it at the range, and as a HD gun. It was a fine shooter, and she shot it well. She had a Tyler's T grip on it, that she loved.

The "best?" Well it's certainly in the running.

I've always been a huge fan of the Speed-Six. I only regret passing them up, first in favor of a used Python and then again for a Combat Commander...it must have been a Colt thing.

I still consider a Speed-Six the finest medium framed .357 for carry around...if I wanted to go smaller, I'd go all the way to the LCR. I found the SP-101, had one and sold it for another Colt, better at neither one or the other

I went through a very large number of carry pieces before settling on the Six. It carries well and more importantly it's a shooter's magnum. It's tough enough to permit regular practice with .357 loads, which to my mind is essential for any carry piece you actually may use some day to save your life. The trigger is superior to more recent Rugers and with T-grips it handles very nice. My preferred stance after experimentation is Chapman with the stiff arm and thumbs parallel.

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I REQUIRE the same from them."
John Wayne "The Shootist"

Fixed it for you.

I know that the written quote online says "expect," but John Wayne said "REQUIRE" in the film.

That said, the "Six" series of handguns are very capable guns. Some consider it large for CCW, but it's really a matter of holster choice and desire.

I like my Security Six and am always on the look out for a 2 3/4" "Six" for a good price.

The Speed Six is a wonderful weapon. The grip does not control magnum recoil very well for me, unless I use an oversized grip that covers the backstrap, and this makes the gun bigger than I want; I prefer an open-backed grip/stocks that leave the backstrap exposed.

That being said, I really do like my 4" Speed Six, with an open-backed Pachmayr Compac Professional grip, a superbly balanced engineering equation. Load for load, an SP101 controls recoil better, but the Speed Six has better practical accuracy. My Speed Six fills a useful niche between my SP101s and GP100s, just as a K-frame fills a niche between J-frames and L-frames.

I don't carry my Speed Six often, as my wife, uh, requisitioned it. That is OK; I have plenty of other 4" handguns, including a SWEET S&W Model 19-5, and GP100s. I do have my eyes open for another 4" Speed Six, of course.

I prefer the 4" Speed Six. The snubbier ones don't give me any more barrel than an SP101, and a 3.06" SP101 is another one of those perfectly-balanced engineering equations.

Go see if Eagle still makes Secret Service grips for the Speed Six.

I have a pair on my Speed Six AND my 2 3/4 inch Security Six (it was converted to round butt by a gunsmith.)

I highly recommend them for CCW.

I have 2 speed sixes & a service six. They are great shooting revolvers, a little heavy for carry for me, but my biggest regret has been selling a speed six about 2 years ago. Price to acquire now has gone way up.

Best for what? Best for pocket carry? LCR. Best for belt carry (concealed)? SP101. Best for belt carry (open)? GP100.
