Robber Tries Holdup With Flare Gun

The city's armored car guards have been targeted in a number of intricately planned robberies in recent years. The heist that nearly took place Saturday in northern Moscow was bungled from the get-go, however.
A guard was shot in the back with a flare gun by an unidentified assailant near Biberevo metro station at around 9 p.m. Saturday, City Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Valentina Titova said. The guard was delivering cash to a Kopeika discount supermarket.
The attacker snatched a bag containing 300,000 rubles (about $11,500) in cash, but seems not to have realized that the flare would do little damage to the guard's bulletproof vest.
The guard was knocked to the ground by the impact, but quickly rose and fired four shots from his Makarov pistol, disabling the would-be robber's getaway vehicle, a motor scooter, Titova said.
The attacker ditched his scooter, the cash and a sawed-off shotgun and took off running, she said.
