So I bought some barnaul ammunition. 30-06 Steel Cased non corrossive. I did not realize it was steel cased when I bought it.

Would you shoot it or not? The range officer today said to be carefull with it, they have seen problems. I shot 3 rounds & it was pretty dirty. I only have 37 rounds left. So not really a big lose if I just dump it.

What are your thoughts?

It won't hurt a thing. Just be a bit dirty, is all.

Those sporter rifles in 7.62X39 like CZ527s don't blow up when you put steel case through them after all!

I've heard that it's a real mess to clean the chamber after shooting... But then again this is just hearsay and not personal experience.

i try to keep a couple of boxes for test ammo for used guns. its a little dirty but the 180gr soft points usually shoot very well. i had a columbian mauser that would shoot 1/2" groups with the stuff. you will have hard bolt lift becuase of the steel cases but at $5 a box i can live with that

DONT DUMP IT, send it to me for $ my remington feeds everything lol

only thing i shoot steel case in is my sks.....will it function?.....%97 chance it will be fine...m1's don't like it....AR-15'S don't like it.....so.....what EVER YOU DO DON'T TRY IT IN A REM 7400 lol i prob would not run it in a BAR either

Why not? It works well in my 742.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people have such an aversion to steel case... it's dirtier on the whole, but that's pretty much it. Some guns don't like it, but it's not dangerous.

the reason i say don't run it in a 7400 .....they jam enough as it is don't make it worse

Now, that wouldn't even make any sense to say that in the way you said it.

Why would you state not to use steel case in a 7400 in a manner as if you were warning someone?

I suppose the BAR is unreliable as well

Haven't shot it in a while, actually. It's not my favorite rifle, but it is a good one.

I merely have a problem with people who have no idea what they're talking about and just parrot what they hear elsewhere.

However, you fail to answer- is the BAR a jammomatic as well?

All my guns eat Russian ammo just fine.

That includes a FN FAL, a Marlin 336, and an AR-15.

It all depends on your rifle.

Baurnal is better than Wolf. It's good ammo. Have fun with it.

AR-15'S don't like it

I guess I got lucky. I was shooting silver bear through my ar and it was 100% reliable. Not only that, but I managed 3" at 100 yards consistantly with irons in a carbine length gun.

And for the OP; shoot it.

As another couple of posters pointed out, Don't shoot this ammunition in a semi-auto, bolts, pumps, levers, and single shots should be OK.

I blew the extractor off my M1A using Chinese steel case ammunition and the Garand is the same design.
Browning BAR and Remington chamber dimensions run tight and you will probably encounter several failures to feed or extract/eject using steel case ammunition.

Now if you are lucky enough to own an Ohio Ordinance semi-auto copy of the wartime BAR or 1916 Browning M.G., these might just work OK with steel case ammunition.

I don't have big issues with steel cased ammo with some of my guns. I have seen some issues with some steel cased mil-surp ammo which seemed to have a coating on it which my rifle did not like, making the action nearly impossible to work. On the other hand I've had great steel cased ammo that feeds great. If it works good and you don't mind cleaning a lil bit more...go for it!

:)

I should mention I shoot that same Chinese surplus steel case .308 that blew the extractor off one of my M1A rifles in a Saiga .308 and a PTR-91 G3 clone gun without any problems.

The .30-06 steel case I am familiar with is Silver Bear and it comes in 145 FMJ and 168 FMJ bullet weights.
I have no load data for this ammunition and because it isn't loaded or represented as an M2 FMJ alternative, I am a little leery of the stuff for shooting in a semi-auto .30-06 rifle.

I haven't yet found a distributor who is listing the stuff as being in stock right now.
