A local dealer has an S&W Model 17-4 that I'm interested in. It has a 6" barrel, original grips, and is about 98%, with only the cylinder line evident during my quick check-out. The bore looks okay, but it has definitely been fired since the last cleaning. The dealer let me dry-fire it with a snap-cap, and both SA and DA triggers are buttery.

I'd use it as a shooter, for plinking, training my kids, and maybe the occasional grouse. It's a consignment gun and they're asking $350. He said it's been there for about two months, but mostly because they had another one which sold first. It was in worse shape, but it was an older 5-screw with higher collector value.

What do you guys think?

$350 is very reasonble
bought a 95% 17-6 a year ago for 325 and I feel that was very fair.

considering a 617 is over $600, seems like $350 is a deal!!!!

Buy it NOW!

$350 is definitely an excellent price.

My K-22 / M17-0 (1959) is about 98-99% as well, also with the original grips (matching serial #s). I paid $430 for it in November. Not a great deal, but pretty reasonable given the market for them. I've seen similar 4 screw K-22s going for nearly $500.

I hope your able to get your K-22, you will enjoy it for a lifetime! IMHO, the K-22 is one of the finest 22 handguns (auto or wheelie) ever made.

Post pics if/when you get it!!!

Wow, no equivocation from anyone. I guess the old K-22s inspire loyalty.

The gun oozed quality, even when compared to newer 617s I've rented. It seemed a lot handier than the full-lugged guns too, which is good for teaching kids.

If it's there in a week when I clear some money from a land sale, it's mine. I'll try and post a picture.

Take the man a Franklin and tell him to lay away it for you! $350 is an excellent deal on a Model 17. Hopefully, it's early enough to have the pinned barrel. The pin was deleted about halfway through the 17-4 production run.

You will not regret buying this gun, and you can sell it for that amount at any gun show, quickly.
I gave $400 for this Model 17-4, and was glad to do it.

Just make sure their is no evidence of excessive dry firing. As I've been told, on any rimfire gun like the K-22, the evidence of dry firing can be observed as peening on the edges of the charge holes on the breach side of the cylinder. This peening/denting is caused by the firing pin striking the edge of the chamber, since the firing pin is slightly off center of the bore axis to strike the rim of the cartridge.

And go through the revolver check out process outlined at the top of the forum, just to make certain it is a good one mechanically, but I doubt you'll find ANY problems.

Do go make a down payment, or sell a kidney if you have to :D - don't let that deal slip away!
