I'm interested in obtaining one of these old revolvers. Can you shoot .38 S&W smokeless powder cartidges safely out of these, or do they require black powder or pyrodex loads?

Is there some reason you want a 3rd. Model (made from 1890 to 1898) rather then a 5th Model (made from 1907-1940)? The latter has a better barrel latch and I would trust it (as I do with mine) to be safe with standard .38 S&W smokeless cartridges. Were I to shoot a 3rd Model I'd use black powder handloads.

I've bought several from Jim and never got a bad one. If he doesn't have one in stock he usually can find whatever you want. Barrel lengths run 2" (very expensive), 3 1/4" (most common), and then 4", 5" and 6" (most uncommon). They were blued or nickel plated. I find them to be very interesting. They were made from 1887 to 1940 - the longest running top-break in Smith & Wesson history. Owned by a long list of interesting people running from Pres. Teddy Roosevelt to Col. Rex Applegate.
