S&W 442 without lock anywhere?

Are there any new 442's without the lock available anywhere? I don't seem to even be able to find a new one with the lock. Suggestions appreciated.

Yes there are. Not sure if they do transfers and what not but theres a store in Michigan called The Firearm Exchange (the address is firearmexchange.com ) that has them for 425. Maybe you could call and ask about a transfer, not sure what it might cost you though.

Check our the http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/ for more info. If you go to the Smith and Wesson official web site they show the firearms available without the IL. I bought a new model 37 without a lock. I love it.

I recently purchased one at Florida Gun Exchange for $419.00. They had a no lock 642 as well but, as much as I love stainless (at least looking) revolvers I went with the 442. I just loved the looks. They do ship.

I've heard that they had some frames lying around and got the "go ahead" to make guns out of them.

So, if that's true, it's not likely.

That was true on the limited run of no lock model 37s last year, but those were also old J frames. All current 38 +P rated J frames are built on the J Magnum frame. I can assure you there are no unused J Magnum frames just lying around. I can also tell you that, direct from the mouth of S&W's VP of Marketing, they want to sell more no lock revolvers. Currently they can only do internal hammer guns without lock, because there is some legal issue with not having locks on exposed hammer guns. I suspect it has something to do with drop testing, but he wouldn't elaborate.

I doubt the no-lock M442/M642 is going to disappear any time soon. S&W doesn't put limited run or guns that are made just to use up old stock on their web site or in their catalog. Both are on the site and in the S&W catalog.

That was my guess, too. If they were "lying around" they were costing money, and the little guns seem to be ever more popular. My guess is that they'd drill them for locks, if they had to, and had them lying around.

I'm very skeptical of that. If they wanted to sell more, they would be offering no-locks in more models than just the 442/642.

There are 2 or 3 more Smiths that I'd buy in a heartbeat if I could buy them brand new without a lock, so if "they want to sell more", they aren't demonstrating that intent by just offering the one J-frame design without it.

If they REALLY wanted to sell more guns they should make them NO lock and toss the MIM parts into the pond. Even if the NO lock/NO MIM guns were 40% more than the current stock I for one would gladly pay the premium....

I've always wondered if S&W executives (and those from other companies as well) ever monitor forums like this.

If they did, they'd find out real quick how to make some big bucks.

I have several of the 37-2 DAO revolvers without the lock from the limited runs. They are from 2005 and 2008, clearly after the lock was on the scene. I don't remember the 37-2 being cataloged or on the website at that time, so I buy the possibility that they were made on old frames or that they were from a contract that was cancelled or overrun.

On the other hand, the no-lock 442/642 are listed on the website, and not as a limited run. Hopefully they are here to stay.

I'm solidly in the anti-lock camp. Its not just for S&W either, I don't have any guns with ILs (or didn't I guess I should say). I just purchased a S&W 21-4 TR that has the IL. Once I verify the gun works as it should (and therefore doesn't need S&W service), I'm going to remove the lock. Its just going to be a fun/range gun anyway, but I'd seriously consider purchasing and carrying a no-lock 21-4 from the factory.

I really like fixed sight revolvers, and the original 21 is far to scarce for me to either find for sale, or be able to afford if I did. I'd love a current production no-lock version for serious use.
