On my 5906, the slide and frame need some TLC, they are stainless IIRC.

I don't have a picture of it at present.

The slide and frame are a bit discolored, darker & probably in need of a good cleaning and there is a bit of holster wear.

I'm looking for recommendations on cleaning it up a bit.

I've heard; scotch brite pads and a tad of citric acid for cleaning up machined stainless, all the way to glass beading, which S&W will do for $150 IIRC. I'm not looking at making a safe queen, just something a little less grungy.

I also need some new grips for it, any recommendations, I checked out Hogue and they look pretty decent for the pistol.

Thank you for your time.

Using an abrazive on the bead blasted finish of a S&W 3rd gen will make it look terrible. Eitehr send it back to S&W or find a reputable blasting shop locally.

The Hogue grips are good, but do add some girth. I have them on my 4006 (same grip size). I did not like the straight back strap of the stock 4006 grips. My 5906 still has the stock grips.

Call S&W and explain what you want. They offer excellent service and know what to do without ruining the finish and disappointing you. Several years back, I bought a used model 6906 and shipped it to them to replace all the springs, check to see if any additional work was necessary to bring it up to what it was supposed to be and to clean up the finish. They did it all in a couple of weeks and when I got it back, I was extremely pleased. Five years later, it has never failed and still looks great.
