Hey Everyone-:D
Looked at a S&W Performance series 629 Extreme with a 12" barrel!! :what:
This thing is just crazy, but I cant find any info on the beast.

For being as long as it is, it actually felt extremely well in your hand.
I was told that S&W made them a few years back. I "Googled" it but did not find anything with a 12" barrel.

I honestly like it, but what can it be used for?:scrutiny: Will a 12" barrel actually perform any better at longer distances?

Any info would help, thanks!!
Wish I had a pic-:banghead:

629 Extreme

I have a 629 Extreme unfired and in the original case with sling.

It's for sale for a reasonable price. Make an offer.

It would be sweet for handgun hunting. I think the biggest advantage would be the extra velocity it would give the bullet by having a longer barrel. That and the extra length would make it easier to cleanly support in the crotch of branches while sighting it for the shot.

Of if you liked the Batman movies it would be a sweet concealed carry gun if you want to emulate Jack Nicholson's version of The Joker.... :D

I have the Taurus M44 with the 12" barrel. Dropped a muley at 110 yds. and a few hogs at various distances. It's a hoot to shoot. If you conceal carry, make you mistake that a woman will never ask you "Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" She'll know.

I have a S&W t-shirt that says, "Yes, that's a pistol in my pocket.":D

I also have a 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk. Long barrels are fun, and I can keep them in the black (on a big enough target) at 100 yards offhand with the thing. The muzzle weight helps steady it, and the long sight radius is great. I have a peep on it now. I'm not sure I'd add the weight and bulk of a scope, since the sight radius is sufficient for the effective range of the thing.

However, and it's a biggie, with a very long barrel, the gun is extremely sensitive to changes in the load (I handload for it). The internal ballistics are such that the traveling bullet with the propellant behind it raises the long barrel quite a bit before the bullet exits. So, a slower load raises POI by a huge amount, and a faster load drops it a lot.

With the plowhandle single action I have, grip is also an issue for the same reason. You really have to hang onto it until the bullet is fully clear of the muzzle. Otherwise, it's hard to prevent severe vertical stringing. With a S&W double action grip design, that's probably much easier to do -- but you still will need to hang onto the thing with a nice, consistent grip.:)

Long-barreled revolvers are fun to shoot. A friend of mine has an 8 3/8" 686. I would love to have that revolver.
