Do they make one at the factory or do I need a 'smith to do it for me. Will it retain enough mass to ensure reliable primer strikes? Also is this a real bear to do myself? My sp101 is all modular and is a snap to replace the hammer. Thw Smith is a different beast all together. I really love my k frame snub, tho I am considering getting the 3" tube. After all parts and labor it will come to 230-250:( , so that's low on the priority list. I want the hammer bobbed to give me a smoother snag free draw. TIA for any help.

You can do it yourself, but over in West Hurley, N.Y. the Gun Parts Corporation (also known as Numrich) sells factory hammers that have been despured. (www.e-gunparts.com). If you keep your old hammer you can always switch back.

Unless someone has tampered with, or replaced the original springs, ignition shouldn't be a problem.

Changing the hammer without experience is another matter. If you are going to do your own gunsmithing spend the money and buy a shop manual first. One of the most popular is: The S&W Revolver - A Shop Manual, by Jerry Kuhnhausen. Available from: www.brownells.com or www.amazon.com

Welcome to The High Road... Where we aim to please. ;)

Anyway, I suspect you could order a hammer, but for liability reasons Taurus might insist on installing it. For information, call the company at: (305) 624-1115

Also check The Parts Corporation (Numrich Arms) at www.e-gunparts.com

They might have a nuw or used hammer.

I did this one myself several years ago on a bench grinder. I didn't even take the hammer out of the gun. Never had a failure to fire. This is my daily CCW piece.

I have bobbed the hammers on several J frame S&Ws and a Taurus 85. It is very easy to do. Just be sure you have the correct screwdriver so you don't mess up the screws in the side plate.

I cut my hammer with a high speed grinder, polished the stub and reblued.

I never had any reliability problems.

Like Armedcitizen,

I carry a bobbed 3" 65. It is not my daily carry since my daily carry is an autoloader, but it is a great shooter and sometime carry. It has never misfired due to the lack of the spur.
