S&W 645 on layaway

Went last night to get a sandwich...and my sandwich place is next to the gun shop. Had not stopped in for a few weeks to see what used guns they had...so I stopped in.

Found they had a Smith and Wesson 645...that came with three mags. Had one of the guys pull it and it was nice....would rate it about 95%. No box or papers. I was not familiar with the 645...and the counter guy was no help.

I have been wanting to get a 5906 and a 6906...but I decided to put the 645 on layaway. The shop was asking $325 for it.

I have five days to cancel the layaway and get 100% of my deposit.

So the big question is...do I keep it? Is $325 a fair price?

You don't remember Miami Vice? Crockett carried one (after retiring the Bren Ten) in his famous Galco shoulder harness. Not the true reason you should buy it, but a conversation starter none the less. Exceptional reputation and a great price.

The S&W 645 will feed ANYthing. Mine liked SPEER 250 gr LSWC. FWIW, early 645 mags had a tendency to crack aft of the feed lips. Check your mags. S&W should replace them. Ealy 645s (with rounded white outlined rear sight) also tended to shoot LOW with everything. I replaced my rear sight with a Millet fully adjustable model and solved that problem.

It's a steal; Don't think you'll regret that one; have third 4506 on layaway at the moment; they're like peanuts; can't stop.

Thanks for everyone's imput. From looking around the web...seems to be a well-liked item. The fact that Crocket used in Miami Vice seals the deal. I am a child of the 80's and that was a show I loved...still do and now that I have a 645...may have to go on Amazon and buy the first couple of seasons on DVD!

So it will be a keeper!

On the hunt now for a couple more mags...

Solid gun. Huge all stainless autoloader. The damn thing will feed dirt clods if you can get them into the mag.

I had one and foolishly traded it away.

If you don't like shooting it, you can use it as a sledge hammer.

For the price, it's great.

The gun has an unprecedented reputation for reliability. For $325, it makes you wonder why 1911 .45s are so expensive. I have a 645 and would take it over any 1911 out of the box that I know. Get the 5906, too, when you have the chance, but don't sell the 645 to do it.

I have a 645 and find it is the most reliable of all my 45 pistols (10+). Nice and heavy single stack that handles recoil remarkably well also. When I bought it the gun shop guy tried to talk me out of the sale and to get a nice Kimber instead. HA HA Saw him at the range 2 weeks later, I out shot his $1500 wonder Kimber and he offered to swap me even. Yeah rite. I only paid $325 for mine also.

You will be pleased. Mine is a dedicated home defense pistol. It weighs a ton, and has never jammed.

It's worth repeating that the feed system is UTTERLY reliable...........I have never seen one that needed any throat work to get it to function, as do so many 1911s. (try feeding an empty case thru a stock 1911! That 645 WILL)

I have owned and carried a 645 for over twenty years, I have never experienced a failure to feed or fire!

Thanks for all of the input and support. Very happy with the purchase...I will have to wait about 30 more days till I have the money to pay it off...so I know time will drag.

I must tell this story...the day I put the 645 away...I had been watching on Auction Arms a S&W 6906...that was being sold by my FFL dealer (all of his business is putting up others guns). He rated it at 95% and it came with one mag and the box. When I got home for work...the auction had 4.5 hours left and the 6906 was up to $366. It had over thirty bids...so I just figured I had to forget it...as I was sure it was going to push $400 in the last hours.

Just a couple of hours later...is when I came upon the 645...which was a much better deal.

I had to go see my FFL dealer today as I was finally picking up a LNIB S&W 686-1 (4") that came with all papers and box ( I have a thread in the revolver section on this buy). I told him the story about watching the 6906 and how I gave up on it...just to come upon the 645 a couple of hours later. He told me that the guy who won the 6906 was the last bid at $366...so it never went any higher....go figure. But he told me that the deal I got for the 645 was very good...and that I will find a 6906 eventually.

Well anyway...here I sit playing with the new 686-1. I must say...one of the best triggers I have ever come across. Can't wait to get it to the range.

Too bad you passed up an emerald for a sapphire, or was it a tangerine for an orange? You still got one heck of a deal and it sounds like your future may include a few more. Just remember what us old guys (ok, I'm pushing 40) have learned: the chase is always exciting but it's not the end game.

I'm excited for you! Maybe we could start a webathon to get that baby out of hock; ). It will be worth the wait and that 686 can sure help in passing the time. Congratulations again for an outstanding buy.

I wish I had more money to buy all the 2nd and 3rd generation S&W's I want. I want a 645 or a 4506 very badly, but taxes this month, and again in Jan are making it highly unlikely for the time being..

How can I go on?

A bargain even at more than $325. I paid $500 for a new old dealers stock with 5 mags several years ago.The 645 is built like a tank and mine digests anything from 185 gr. LSWC to 230 gr. JHP.
