Just an update on the lemon-flavored 637 from the post below...

http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=465649

Well, I had to send it back a couple of times, bicker with the head of customer support on several occasions, and even threaten to take legal action against them. But finally, after having the gun examined by a competent member of their repair team, they agreed that the entire gun needed to be replaced.

I just took the new one out for a test shoot and it works like a champ. I bought my 637 back in May of this year, and finally now in Sept I have a useful gun. I wish I could say better things about S&W's customer service and repair service, but I really can't. However, they did finally do the right thing and get me a good gun.

I really like the new unit and I hope it works for years to come. Sadly, my experience has left me a bit shy from the company, and I am not sure if I can really recommend them at this point. Nonetheless, I really love these little revolvers... especially when they work as they should.

I had a similar experiance but my gun was a 340m&p they replaced the gun after 3 weeks. overall iam happy with the service i received and i love the gun. Im glad it worked out for you. S&W is a good company anyone can make a lemon.

I had a similar experience with a 29-2 I sent in to have the forcing cone recut and the barrel turned in. They damaged the barrel (without telling me). There ensued a several month long battle with them. I had to get my attorney involved, who contacted their corporate counsel. He got in contact with their VP for customer service. They paid for one of the replacement barrels I purchased (I had to get two to find one good one and they had none) and refinished the gun. It's got about as much value as a used Glock now, but if I ever have to shoot somebody with it, they'll die knowing they were shot with a really pretty gun.

Most people seem to have a positive experience with S&W customer service. Those of us who don't, usually have a REALLY bad experience. After the VP got involved, they made a reasonable effort to correct the situation. I sent an appropriate letter of appreciation regarding that VP to the president of S&W. He deserved it, being the only person up to that point who didn't lie to me or treat me like crap.

Buy older guns. I hate being that guy but there is not much good that comes out those doors these days.

I've never had to use Sig's warranty service on mine, but I did use Ruger once. They were great... they went above and beyond my expectations, and even sent me an extra mag for my troubles with the MKIII.

Sad that S&W required so much pushing to get them to do the right thing.

Buy older guns.

Really bad advice. Everyone needs to keep buying the new products from S&W and should stay away from the older S&W revolvers. The older ones are nowherre near as nice and I have taken it upon myself to try and accumulate these poor specimens to keep them out of the hands of unsuspecting consumers.

Oh! you are so good... :uhoh:

But I also consider it to be MY RESPONSIBILITY to protect inocent or ill-informed consumers from going down the wrong path...

Clearly, older guns are.... well.... older. :D

If I ever get another Smith, it will be one of the "classics". However, the replacement they sent me appears to be of good quality, and I expect it to last. Amazing how different 2 "identical" guns can be.
