I was in the gun shop this weekend, and noticed that the firing pins on several used S&W's did not have springs and were loose. Was this factory? Or have they been replaced?

Hammer mounted FP?
Normal.

Some have a spring, and some don't.
Depends on age & model.

All newer guns with the frame mounted FP should have a retractor spring.

S&W used firing pin (hammer nose) springs on some of their revolvers to push the hammer nose downward, but there seems no rhyme or reason. The first M&P didn't have a spring, but some later guns did. They seem to have dropped it across the board for a good while, but around 1988 they went back to a spring on their stainless steel guns.

For the hammer mounted firing pin movement is normal and necessary. The hammer moves in an arc and the hammer nose bushing is stationary.
