I've got an old model 36 from the mid to late 60's. This one has a square butt. I inhereted the gun quite a few years ago. I never really noticed a difference in the grips until I picked up a 642 this year.

Are square butted J frame snubbies fairly common? I just haven't noticed before.

I can post a picture tonight if anyone wants me to.

Thanks

Yup... very common. Back before all the custom grip choices were available, the square butts were a popular choice for something a little easier to hang on to while shooting.

If the question is pertaining to J-frames in general today, the answer is: not very common.

With older Models 36 and 60 is where you see them.

My old Model 37 (alloy j-frame) is a square butt. Seems S&W kinda went through phases with the square-round butt styles. There are plenty of both in circulation.

Not common enough that Crimson Trace makes a laser for the square butt Model 36.
I've got a couple I'd like to equip with CT.
