I recently got the M&P 15 tactical AR-type rifle made by S&W. It is chambered for 5.56 (not .223 Rem) and has a 1:9 twist rate. What will tend to be the most accurate bullet weight(s) for this rifle, and can I expect the same accuracy (or greater or less) when shooting .223 Rem ammunition?

Experiment with 55 grain and up. You may or may not see any appreciable difference in accuracy with heavier bullets. My 1:8 shoots 55gr great and I didn't see any real gains going heavier, 55s are cheap and available, so that's what it gets.

Theoretically, you'd lose accuracy shooting .223, but again, I doubt it'll be noticeable unless you're a national match shooter with good sights, a solid rest, etc, etc, etc.

62 grain will be the functional maximum.. if ur using surplus it wont matter... If you're handloading theres alot more to worry about for the time being, dont worry about it.

I have the same rifle and I use 55 gr. Lake City FMJ, it seems to work perfectly fine. I've used some various heavier rounds, if they shot any better it wasn't measurable/noticeable.

los,
Nice looking setup!!! I have an EoTech on mine, but will be looking for a scope as well. What are the specs on the one in your case?

Thanks.

It's a Millett TRS-1.

It has an illuminated (intensity adjustible) mil-dot reticle and 4-16x50mm. Got it attached to an ADM QD Recon-S mount. Awesome combination.
