I'm seriously considering a S&W M&P9c as my first handgun/carry gun and had a question about the optional ambi safety.

Is the ambi safety an option at no additional cost or is it an additional cost above and beyond the standard M&P9c price?
Does the safety come with it in the box or can you order it (assembly required),or do you have to send it in to have S&W do it if you didn't buy it with it already attached?

I don't know if there is a cost difference, but it comes mounted on the gun from the factory.

Does the M&P safety lock into place solidly? I read early reports that the safety wasn't very positive and could move unintentionally.

I bought my M&P40c with the manual safety. The lever has just the right amount of force required to flip it one way or the other. I'm left-handed could easily manipulate it with my left thumb without having to change my grip. Or I could swipe the lever on the left side with my left index finger upon drawing it from holster - same way I do with my other non-ambidextrous handguns with manual safety. I am sure if you hit it hard enough "unintentionally", it will move. Then again, the same applies to DA revolver/semiauto triggers.

The ambi slide "release" OTOH is not my favorite feature of this handgun. It functions very much the same as Glocks - more of a slide "lock" than a "release lever". Nothing wrong with the way it works. I just got used to being able to release the slide comfortably one-handed.

Volfy thanks. I mentioned it because some people have said that the safety didn't feel like it was clicking into place like a 1911 safety does. It might just be mental since the 1911 safety has a notch in the slide and the M&P safety looks like an add on and not integral to the gun.

I just ordered an M&P 9 from my local dealer with the ambi thumb safety and mag. drop safety, and there is no price difference. Same price whatever configuration you want - with or without the mag. disconnect safety and with or without the ambi thumb safety.

I have an M&P 45 with safety, and it takes much less effort to disengage than my 1911's. It has often changed positions when carried in holster or backpack.

I have been meaning to take it apart to see what might be adjusted or tightened, but have just been to lazy as of yet.

I have the 9c with thumb safety.

Its easier to move than all of the 1911's and BHP I have handled.

The lever is also quiet large IMO. (I'm going to shrink mine down and see how that goes)

When I took mine apart I could see potentially 2 ways to stiffen it up:
1) There is a tiny spring you could replace. Its roughly about 1/8" dia x about 5/16" long.
2) You could sharpen the grooves that the spring loaded pin thingy move over that creates the detent feel. (not using any correct terms to describe)

I'm modding mine smaller 1st though as I think its biggest flaw (if you will) is its shear size. I think this will lesson the chance of it getting bumped off and still provide plenty of surface for my thumb.

It sticks out further than most 1911's and BHP's and has been bumped off more times as well.

Thanks for letting me know about how big and easy it is to bump off accidentally. I'll keep an eye on it.

I ordered a M&P9c from Buds on Monday (should be here tomorrow), got a ridiculous deal on it that I couldn't pass up. I'll play around with it a little, heard it's easy to outright remove if you don't like it but I think if anything I'll just modify it a little if I find myself bumping it off too often.

I have seen some holsters for the M&P specifically warn that they are not compatible with manual safety equipped versions. I can see why. The safety lever does stick out more than a lot of other ambi safeties.

I'm keeping mine on the gun. I prefer the added safety the manual lever provides. I will just have to pick a holster that won't interfer with the lever. Going in and out of the holster is really the only time when bumping the safety is a issue.
