I picked up a very nice model 36 at the gun show today and am wondering if anyone might have any info on it.

It has 9952x inside the crane and on the lower left of the butt. also has J57326x on the bottom of the butt. Which of these numbers is the serial number?

Anyone have a guess as to how old it is or what it's worth?

Yes Sir you have a S&W model 36 that was made circa 1976-1977 is a Round Butt, Nickel Finish 5 shot "J" frame revolver. The number that you comment on being on the yoke and the frame will also be found inside the sideplate and is number that married the yoke, frame and sideplate together. The litte guns were produced to be carried by plaincloths law enforcement and before being assigned a model number were refered to as the "Chief Special" They are .38 specials and should be fired with standard velocity .38 spl. 147-158 grain mmunitions. They are the predecessor to the model 60. Your little gun may have a -1 after the model number shown in the yoke cut out.
Regards P.T.

I'll give you a quarter for that piece of junk; or you can just send it to me for safe keeping. lol It's a beautiful little gun. You should be very proud of it.

Not a -1, just a plain "MOD. 36".

So, is 9952x the serial number? or is it J57326x?

Is the finish chrome, nickel, or stainless? (I'm thinking nickel)

Thanks for all the info guys.

I'm guessing this old girl is'nt rated for +P, right?

On another note, I stumbled upon this today

Its a model 66 (no dash) ser. 7K5252x Anybody know it's birthday?

The 66 is'nt as nice as the 36, but it's not ragged out either.

Nice little gun!

I picked up a new, unfired Mod. 36 (circa 1982 according to the fine folks on THR) last week for ~$315. It's a honey! My wife has claimed it as hers. We put its first 100 rounds through it today and it's a real nice shooter. Enjoy yours.

Sorry guys but your DOB's are all wrong. If it's a Model 36 no-dash then it has to be 1966 or older. The M36-1 was released in 1967. If it is a M36 no-dash then it isn't rated for .38 +P ammo. The Model 36-9 released in Aug. 1996 is the first M36 to be .38 +P rated, unfortunately, that model also went to MIM hammer and trigger parts. (Thank you SCSW 3rd Edition)

I believe Skeeter is right. The second revolver looks a whole lot more like a 4" 66 than a 60. The K in the serial no. denotes K frame, not a J that the 60 is built on IIRC. The grips are not J frame grips. Re-check the model inside the crane. The 66 is a stainless version of the venerable Mod. 19. Both of yours are fine revolversl

If you're in doubt about +Ps in your M36, send a query email to [email protected]. I had similar concerns about using them in my older (1980) M60 and they gave me the thumb's-up and within a few hours. Good support people there.
