I have a Model 10 which I inherited from my grandpa. The story goes that long ago my uncle fired a few "hot" handloads through it and it's never been the same since.

When pulling the trigger double action often the hammer will only come back around 1/4", the cylinder tries to rotate, but doesn't, and the trigger stops.

When this happens normally you can just cock the hammer as normal and everythings alright.

Sometimes when cocking the hammer to fire the weapon single action the hammer binds, again, about 1/4" back. The trigger moves proportionately, the cylinder tries to spin.

To get it to function I can wiggle the cylinder slightly back and forth, then it will work, or else, open the cylinder and close it so it's between chambers.

Does anyone know if this is something I could fix myself? If not, any idea how much a gunsmith would charge to fix this, whatever it is. It may not pay to fix it, but it's a nice little gun besides that problem.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Send it back to S&W, there are a lot of possible causes but it needs to be fixed right. S&W service charges are very reasonable too.

I had a Ruger Blackhawk where the cylinder would bind on the forcing cone.....turned out it was just dirty. I had been running lead round nose bullets and this leaded up the cylinder and it would not turn anymore. Now I just shoot jacketed rounds. Good Luck.

I never thought about sending it back to the manufacturer, that seems like it would make the most sense and be best for it. Thanks! Now to check into the proper procedure to do so.

Before you send it back, check one thing. The extractor rod on S&W revolvers sometimes tries to unscrew, binding up at the front lock. Swing out the cylinder and try turning the extractor rod. (The older ones are right hand thread, the newer ones left hand, but you can readily tell if it turns which way it needs to go to tighten up.)

If that is the problem, you can unscrew the extractor rod all the way, put a touch of Loc-Tite on the threads and screw it back down. That should fix the problem permanently.

Thanks Jim, unfortunately (because it would be a simple fix) it's quite tight, I can't get it to turn in either direction.

Thanks, I got that, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

It seems to me that the cylinder has some front to back slop in it that it shouldn't. I'll check out another model and see how much play it has.

Thanks for everything.
